About this listen

The Trump 2.0 Administration has certainly shaken things up amid the tariffs rolled out on "Liberation Day", i.e., April 2, 2025. Concerning the tariffs being reciprocal, they aren't as they are all set at a rate of 50% of those placed on the US by nations and regions practicing protectionism, which has been ongoing since the 1930s. I wish that the flat rate of 10% didn't need to be applied to all imports into the US, but it's clear that many countries that have trade surpluses are comfortable entering markets that we have trade agreements with, like the USMCA, and dumping into our markets from neighboring nations to avoid restrictions that have been placed on them to uphold democracy and peace in the world, which may be good business but really bad politics. I like people from China and Chinese products, but I don't think that the world should have to support communism if it doesn't want to. I am sure that something can be worked out diplomatically, but numbers don't lie. It's clearly apparent by anyone who can do basic arithmetic that we are engaging in not-so-free trade with people who are practicing protectionism. This isn't right, and we must stand together against this injustice. Economics isn't about charity, and trade is important for the exchange of goods, ideas, and specialization of labor. Protectionism is a not peaceful approach to the exchange of goods, and it could be argued that it's a form of theft and attempted subjugation. My ancestors left Europe and West Asia to escape the tyranny and serfdom of the continent, and in their honor, I don't intend to go back. The stock markets have had a bit of a hiccup, but the sky is never falling. Tariffs wouldn't have to be used if our trading partners in North America had complied with the USMCA in conjunction with the high levels of protectionism that we are seeing from states throughout the world with trade surpluses. Free trade is free trade, and if you are taxing all exports at 100% nationally in conjunction with slapping duties on imports from other nations, this isn't free trade. I am confident that the markets will correct and that our trading partners will see the error of their ways as well as the people of Greenland exercising their autonomy from Denmark to engage in some business with North American companies as the region is part of our continent. There is no reason that organizations can't mine the territory and bring the much-needed minerals of the large island to the free world for processing with a bit of cooperation. After all, the 57,000 people that inhabit the place mainly live on the south coast and engage in hunting and fishing. If operations are set up on the northern part of the island, we can extract resources in a sustainable manner that causes minimal disruption to their way of life in conjunction with bringing great economic benefit to all. My ancestors left Europe and West Asia for prosperity and freedom, and I may still eat potatoes but intend on eating a balanced diet, not perishing as a result of malnutrition and famine! Nor will I support the dictators of Eastern Europe that intend to drag the US and the rest of the world into WW3 as they committed acts of genocide against my ancestors killing 6 million Jews and other minorities, and given the lack of diplomacy and recent behavior, look to be trying to repeat history. As for the Danes, they are good people and annexed Greenland in 1753, but since they have been autonomous since 1953, the people of Denmark don't have a right to make decisions regarding the landmass as it's not their territory nor was it taken legally or ethically.
