About this listen
Man no longer worships the old gods; forgotten and forsaken, they have become nothing more than myth and legend. But all that is about to change. After the ruins of a vast, ancient civilization are discovered on the ocean floor, Coast Guard officers find a series of derelict ships drifting in the current - high-priced yachts and leaking fishing boats, all ransacked, splattered in blood, their crews missing and presumed dead.
And that's just the beginning.
Vacationing artist Larry Neuhaus has just witnessed a gruesome shark attack, a young couple torn apart right before his eyes...at least, he thinks it was a shark. And when one of these victims turns out to be the only son of Roger Hays, the most powerful man in the country, things go from bad to worse. Now, to stop the carnage, Larry and his newfound friends must work together to unravel a mystery as old as time, and face an enemy as dark as the ocean depths.

Story
On the advice of his wife, Paul Rice is making plans to attend his 10th year High School reunion. Returning to his boyhood home of Harmony, Indiana, he finds that he is still haunted by memories of that time-memories of Deidra, his first love, and memories of the Wide Game. It was 10 years ago that Paul and his friends watched their day of fun become a race for their lives, a fight for their very souls. Now, as he meets the survivors of that day once more, Paul makes a chilling discovery: The incomprehensible forces that toyed with them have yet to finish playing their own game.

My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

Story
In the beginning, the gods destroyed the world. Five hundred years later, things haven’t gotten much better for humans. The demigods that were left behind to guard over humanity have been using them as fodder for an endless civil war between themselves, and the humans just go on dutifully slaughtering each other, battle after battle. It’s not all bad, though. Perry McGown makes his living off those bloody, stinking battlefields. He works on a crew that reclaims all the spent shell casings. But if anyone found out that he was a deserter from the war, he’d be executed for heresy.

A journey into the deepest, darkest jungles of the Venezuelan Amazon...and a primeval place and time that mankind was never meant to exist in. Ben Cartwright, former soldier, home to mourn the loss of his father, stumbles upon cryptic letters from the past between author Arthur Conan Doyle and his great-great-grandfather who vanished while exploring the Amazon jungle in 1908. Amazingly, these letters lead Ben to believe that his ancestor’s expedition was the basis for Doyle’s fantastical tale of a lost world inhabited by long-extinct creatures.

Not what I was expecting
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
As the title says, it's not what I was expecting, but that isn't a bad thing in this case. I often take long road trips and will listen to books while driving. If the book isn't overly interesting my mind will wander away to other thoughts. That didn't happen with this book, My passenger and I couldn't wait to get back in the truck and keep listening every time we had to stop. Well written, easy to follow, well developed characters and story line. I truly enjoyed this book.

Don't Go Back in the Water
This excellent novel by Michael West strikes me as a reinterpretation of Lovecraft’s classic Dunwich Horror with a little legacy of Atlantis thrown in for good measure. The first portion of the book is a half-mystery as West introduces a cast loosely connected by their ties to organized-crime boss, Roger Hays. As the remains of Atlantis are discovered in the Atlantic Ocean, half-man/half-fish creatures begin to haunt the waters off the small east coast tourist trap of Colonial Bay. The reader knows there are monsters, but the characters in the novel do not. That’s why I refer to the plot as a “half-mystery”—the reader knows a lot of what is going on and watches as the various protagonists start to uncover the horrifying truth. By the end of the first part of the novel, the whole cast is converging on Colonial Bay for a variety of reasons. They are about to discover a more literal definition of the term “tourist trap” than the one we generally mean.
The second and third parts of Poseidon’s Children watches the various protagonists from Part I arrive at Colonial Bay and learn there are a nightmare’s worth of mythical creatures hidden under the surface. The tension just keeps ratcheting higher with each successive chapter. There’s a lot of good action here, but I found the politics within the community of “monsters” even more fascinating. On the one hand, we find the fanatics who are ready to announce their presence to the world by eating a lot of people. On the other hand, you have more pragmatic creatures who recognize that the humans who defeated them millennia ago are now far more numerous and have much deadlier weapons. Yet recognizing that this nest of creatures probably doesn’t spell the end of humanity all by itself doesn’t make the danger to the humans in the area any less severe. People die in this series and West keeps you guessing as to who will die next.
I enjoyed two of the organized crime-types (Horror Show and Roger Hays) more than the technical good guys in the story. I think that’s because when you’re dealing with human-eating monsters, people who are tough enough to fight back look good no matter what their other drawbacks. I enjoyed the fight scenes and the conclusion of the story quite a bit, but it’s the epilogue that truly got me excited for the sequel. I’m definitely planning to read West’s next book.
I received this book from Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review.

I am hooked
I enjoy stories that borrow from mythology and weave a world almost believable. it starts out like an old episode of the X-Files then we get more of an inside view of the happenings. there was enough gore to keep it interesting and now I want to see where this story is going in the next book. I will say that I requested this book from the publisher as it appealed to my interests, and I voluntarily left this review.

Awesome
I will admit it took me a little to get into this book and understand what was going on. However once it got me I was hooked. Think of Percy Jackson on steroids for adults. It gives you a very different perspective on Greek Mythology. Salzman does an amazing job at brining these characters to life!

Mythology mash-up!
Definitely not your usual shark attack tale. We are treated to a unique mixture of paranormal shape-shifters, mythological beings, archeological mysteries, and horror sea creatures all located on an isolated island. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? There’s an odd mash-up of Greek, Norse, and quasi-mythological elements, but it works well for the tale. It’s a slow starter to be sure, and there are plenty of characters to keep track of, but once all the introductions are made and the monsters make their appearance it gets interesting. It’s promoted as the first book of a series but it could stand on its own. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Powerful
I don't want to give away to much but this book was phenomenal and the plot was on point. The characters are strong and believable. The narrator was absolutely amazing. When they find parts of Atlantis all hell breaks loose releasing unknown underwater creatures who have a thirst for blood. Do not miss this book I could not stop listening to it. I had to know who was going to get killed or what was going to go down. I received this audio book at my request and I am glad I did. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review. Worth the money. Wow!

very enjoyable
I received this book for free on the condition I provide an unbiased review.
With that out of the way, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the writing. The story was well written and moved at a steady pace. I did take a small leap a faith as I had not listened to anything narrated by Salzman. I'm glad I did take the leap though because he did a fine job narrating this book. I look forward to more from this author!
