"Persuasione" è ciò che avviene quando la protagonista del romanzo, Anna, si fa convincere da ragioni di convenienza e di rango a non sposare l'uomo che ama. Ma la vita riserverà ad Anna, anni dopo, un'altra opportunità di dar ragione ai propri sentimenti e non alle regole degli interessi di casta. Il tema è caro all'autrice, gli ambienti sono quelli descritti in altri suoi libri: campagna inglese, Bath, grandi e piccole residenze, compagnie di parenti e amici che non hanno bisogno di lavorare per vivere, e quindi si ingegnano a passare il tempo fra salotti e partite di caccia.
