Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

Story
Dubliners is a collection of short stories by James Joyce that was first published in 1914. The 15 stories were meant to be a naturalistic depiction of the Irish middle-class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century. The stories were written at a time when Irish nationalism was at its peak and a search for a national identity and purpose was raging; at a crossroads of history and culture, Ireland was jolted by various converging ideas and influences.

Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.

Story
Jane Austen’s most popular novel, originally published in 1813, some 17 years after it was first written, presents the Bennet family of Longbourn. Against the background of gossipy Mrs. Bennet and the detached Mr. Bennet, the quest is on for husbands for the five daughters. The spotlight falls on Elizabeth, second eldest, who is courted by Mr. Darcy, though initially she is more concerned with the fate of her other sisters. This marvelous account of family life in Regency England is read with customary panache by Juliet Stevenson.

Adopted into the household of her uncle, Sir Thomas Bertram, Fanny Price grows up a meek outsider among her cousins in the unaccustomed elegance of Mansfield Park. Soon after Sir Thomas absents himself on estate business in Antigua (the family's investment in slavery and sugar is considered in the Introduction in a new, post-colonial light), Mary Crawford and her brother Henry arrive at Mansfield, bringing with them London glamour, and the seductive taste for flirtation and theatre that precipitates a crisis.

Story
Jane Austen's first novel - published posthumously in 1818 - tells the story of Catherine Morland and her dangerously sweet nature, innocence, and sometime self-delusion. Though Austen's fallible heroine is repeatedly drawn into scrapes while vacationing at Bath and during her subsequent visit to Northanger Abbey, Catherine eventually triumphs, blossoming into a discerning woman who learns truths about love, life, and the heady power of literature. The satirical novel pokes fun at the gothic novel while earnestly emphasizing caution to the female sex.

Story

The work tells the story of Jane's early life, her experience at Lowood School and as a governess. Her refusal to accept Rochester's love on any but her own strictly moral terms is a passionate cry for independence.

Excellent reading of my favorite Jane Austen
Juliet Stevenson gives a truly wonderful reading of this book. I have a hard time with narrators, and I've never found an Austen audiobook I could enjoy before. However, this reading shines. She does the characters well, gives vivacity and emotion to key moments without over stretching, and the cadence and skill of her reading makes the text easily and gracefully accessible. Austen's text shines.
The book itself of course...what is there to say? This is my favorite Austen novel. The story centers around older characters than her other novels, and the tenor of the book in general is more mature. Anne Elliot is also my favorite heroine (although Fanny is a close second, as is Elinor Dashwood). She is exceptionally smart and "tenderness itself." The honesty with which Austen reads and portrays her characters is absolutely brilliant (the gloves are off a bit more in this one than her earlier books).
This one — book and reading — is not to be missed and well worth the investment. I will come back to it again and again.

Persuasion by Jane Austen
This book was wonderful to listen to! Juliet Stevenson did an outstanding job narrating the book. I loved the ending, of course Ann, Captain Wentworth & Mrs. smith. This is a delightful book. I hated to see the book end!

Love this book, I'm persuaded
If you could sum up Persuasion in three words, what would they be?
Interesting, too short and good
Who was your favorite character and why?
Captain Wentworth is my favorite Character because he is strong and loving and you cannot help but feel for him.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No I did not but it I listened to it within a week.

Jane Austen is the best storyteller
Enjoyed it all, other than the particular voices she chose for both Anne and Captain Wentworth. Otherwise, performed very well.

Delicious performance
I love to inhabit Jane Austen's world, particularly during electoral season silliness in the U.S. I thought Juliet Stevenson's performance enhanced the satire and the romance of the book.

Excelente narradora
Normalmente si voy a escuchar un audio libro es por qué ya lo había leído una o dos veces antes. Me gusto mucho el trabajo de Stevenson!

Very Good
Other than occasionally making Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth too desperate and eager in their interactions with each other (and particularly in the final letter), this is a very good adaptation of a great book

Narrator is a perfect match for Austen
Juliet Stevenson is a perfect narrator for Persuasion. Her interpretation is the best I’ve come across. The life she brings to what has long been my favorite Austen book is delightful, and she is able to lend to the voice of each character such uniqueness and variation that the performance only deepens an understanding of who each character is at heart. There were many moments when I was so moved by her style of narration that I replayed certain scenes to have the pleasure of listening again before moving on to the next chapter. I’ll be looking out for more opportunities to listen to Stevenson’s narration of my favorite classic novels.
