 Le paludi pontine sono terra di città nuove, "trionfali" e desolate, che nessun turista visitava fino a ieri. Sono un alveare di contadini, gente che parla in romanesco e ricorda in veneto, spediti lì dal Duce - quello "buono", quello che mieteva il grano - a bonificare stagni e pantani. Che poi, mica la voleva, lui, Littoria. Lui si accontentava di qualche borgo rurale, perché gli italiani sono un popolo di agricoltori.

Ma alla fine ci si è affezionato, e anche ora che si chiama Latina il suo fantasma ci si aggira sempre, di notte, a bordo d'un rumorosissimo Guzzi 500-Falcone sport. Controlla che tutto vada bene e che la gente del posto non combini troppi casini. Perché "di là" vogliono caricarlo pure dei peccati loro. In fondo è a causa sua che abitano quel brandello di Lazio. Perfino il sindaco è un uomo suo.

Ai tempi lo avevano nominato federale, "federale facente funzioni" a essere precisi, e adesso che una classifica del Sole-24 ore ha piazzato Latina fra le peggiori città del Paese, per migliorarne l'immagine ha partorito un'idea folgorante: i trapianti di cuore. I trapianti sono una cosa ultramoderna e si fa una grandissima figura, sostiene. E c'è infine Palude che ne ha bisogno, Palude che quando era ancora in forze ti alzava con una mano sola, se non stavi zitto. Adesso ha il cuore stanco. Peccato solo che sia un operaio rosso e comunista. Ma non importa, è deciso: il trapianto si farà. Per procurarsi un donatore basta in fin dei conti spargere una latta d'olio sopra la Pontina...
