It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

Unusual
I got books 1 and 2 of this series from the Plus catalog, thinking they were sort of chic lit or white noise in the background. They sounded interesting enough to try out. I was most pleasantly surprised and hope you will be, too. They are most definitely not chic lit; they are darkly funny and quite good mysteries. The surprise is buried in the main character and I won't spoil it for you. Give them a try; I don't believe you'll be disappointed.

More Jo Slater please
Dear Jane Stanton Hitchcock,
I love the character of Jo Slater- voiced by the soothing, smooth tones of Barbara Rosenblatt. I just finished a repeat listen and wonder how Jo is doing today. Or maybe some of her pals? If you’re seeing this: the NY social scene portrait that you write about is so much fun and even though terrible things do happen, it’s an amazing slice of life. Thanks for all of the entertainment. To audible listeners:
I highly recommend this book.
