About this listen
Discover how the first Egyptians built the colossal pyramids and the rise of the kings who ruled as gods.
The Egyptian pyramids are some of the greatest building feats ever achieved. At a time when the rest of the world was in the Bronze Age, living in small villages sustained by subsistence farming, the Egyptians built the pyramids.
It is mind-boggling to think they did this when mankind had not yet invented iron or the wheel. They did this when the only tools workmen had were made from either bronze, which had to be constantly re-sharpened, or stone or wood. It’s truly remarkable.
It raises a question: did the people of Egypt really cut great blocks of stone and arrange millions of tons of them into the perfect pyramid shape we all know so well? When you examine the evidence, the answer to that question is obvious.
But many more questions arise from that answer. How did the ancient engineers and designers train? Who first thought up this perfect shape? Did the workers come from slave colonies? How many people are needed to build such a huge structure?
Here’s a small sample of what you will discover:
- Who was the mysterious king who created the world’s first “nation?”
- Why did ancient Egypt’s kings have dozens of their people killed and buried with them when they were placed in royal tombs?
- Who was the architect of the world’s first pyramid?
- How accurate are the measurements of the pyramids?
- Why are they aligned with the stars?
- How many years did it take to build a pyramid?
- Why did the kings suddenly stop building pyramids for their tombs?
- Did Napoleon Bonaparte shoot the nose off the Sphinx for target practice?
- How did gigantic airbags help rescue a collapsing pyramid?

Story
Did you know that it was during the New Kingdom period that ancient Egyptian kings started calling themselves “pharaohs"? Previously, they were simply referred to as kings. But the fact that we call all of them pharaohs today speaks about how important and influential the New Kingdom was. It is also the most researched period of ancient Egyptian history because it has an abundance of surviving evidence. This is also the time when some of the best-known pharaohs ruled, such as Ahmose, Hatshepsut, Thutmose, Nefertiti, and Ramses II.

Story
Listen to the exciting things that happened during the Middle Kingdom of ancient Egypt. Did you know that in this period, Osiris became the main god of the popular religion? His cult was respected by the pharaohs of the Eleventh Dynasty, but it quickly spread throughout Egypt, and ordinary people became his followers. The Middle Kingdom is a short period in Egypt’s history, but it is important because it was a period of political unity and prosperity. Because of that, it is sometimes referred to as the Golden Age of Egypt.

The kingdom of Kush was completely forgotten once it met its end. The stories of its might didn’t survive in the cultures of its successor kingdoms, possibly because Christianization soon followed, which required the people of the Nubian region to turn toward the East and the myths of the Christian messiah.

While the words and actions of the 12 apostles can be found scattered throughout the New Testament, putting together the pieces can be confusing, taxing, and just plain hard. Names are often repeated or changed. Previous jobs and possible destinations are mentioned, but even a map of the ancient world can be difficult to piece together.

Story
The history of the ancient kingdoms of Israel and Judah and their kings is a story of epic heroes and villains. David was the God-chosen savior who fought giants, and the remarkable individual who inspired the world’s greatest artists to create their immortal sculptures and paintings. Solomon is regarded as the author of many of the proverbs that we still use - and the ancient sources say he was married to 70 foreign princesses. The protagonists of this book also include famous rulers of the ancient world, such as Queen of Sheba and Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.

Africa is the continent where the first humans were born. They explored the vast land and produced the first tools. And although we migrated from that continent, we never completely abandoned it. From the beginning of time, humans lived and worked in Africa, leaving evidence of their existence in the sands of the Sahara Desert and the valleys of the great rivers such as the Nile and the Niger.

According to Sumerian scholar Zecharia Sitchin, a superior race of beings once inhabited our world. In The 12th Planet—the product of 30 years of intensive research—Sitchin persuasively argues that humanity sprang from extraterrestrial forebears. In this remarkable account, you'll hear the story of how these ancient visitors traveled to Earth from the stars and planted the genetic seed that would ultimately blossom into a remarkable species—the human being.

fascinating introduction of the pyramids
great stories about how the pyramids 1st came about, and those who dared to buck tradition by building them.
I wish there was a different narrator though, as he is definitely my least favorite. his narration was a bit better this time. I only wish that he would pick one pronunciation of something and stick with it. that has got to be my biggest concern with all of his narrations so far

Interesting info!
This audiobook has a fair share of info on the pyramids and structures built prior to the more well known ones we typically find in history school texts/lessons. I am still baffled as to the how that they even constructed these massive structures. Ah, The Sphinx...such mystery!
I especially liked the chapter on The Workers, and those after that. Info on their diet, physique, and healthcare is neat. Dwarfs? I'd not heard about their presence before. It's almost as if they were used for entertainment. Thoughts of court jesters and circuses popped into my head first when hearing about them.
Overall, quite interesting info is presented. I already would like to listen again as its coverage is quite extensive for just a 1.5 hour listen. Well done.

Short and insightful.
This was a very short and insightful telling of the kingdoms and ancient Egypt looking at it from the position of its rulers and their extravagant burial mounds, which eventually turned into pyramids. I found the chapter on the workers of the pyramids to be very interesting

Great story- okay narration
The story itself was wonderfully written, as always- however, the narration distracted from that. There were things mispronounced, including “Osiris,” and the overall narration style made it hard to enjoy the book.

Did not like the narrator
He constantly raised his voice at the end of each sentence, which was very irritating. Sounded like he was reading to elementary school kids. I could only listen for three chapters, then finished the book by reading it myself.
