Great story. Easy listening. Great narration. Hard to "put down" (stop listening to). My favorite part was the prison days, the leading up to the prison break, and then the actual break itself. Going to make my teenage son listen to this book, as it is set back in "simpler" times and is good for the mind, and we need to get back to that. Got lucky enough to meet the narrator and co-author, Don Goodman. He was like talking to an old friend.

The narrator's southern drawl made me instinctively slow down. Initially I wanted to multi-task, listening while getting other things done that needed doing. But as I listened, I felt myself moving slower and eventually just sitting, lost in the time period and in the story. The authors painted vivid pictures of each character, as well as the settings. This story was sometimes harsh, but those moments felt tolerable and even necessary to this wimpy reader/listener. I couldn't help but make comparisons to Shawshank Redemption and Where the Red Fern Grows, two of my all-time favorites. If you loved either of those books, you will LOVE this book! Ol' Red feels like a blend of both of those timeless stories of love, heartache, friendship, and sweet justice. And like Shawshank, Ol' Red would make a GREAT movie! Can Liam Hemsworth please play Frankie???

Please make this a movie!
