日本の大学が危機に瀕している。２００４年、国立大学は独立行政法人となり「競争原理」の導入へと大きく舵を切った。その結果、国は国立大学へ定期配分する基盤的予算（運営費交付金）を年々削減、研究者は不足分を公募・審査を通じた官民の競争的資金制度でおカネを調達する形へと移行した。これにより国立大学間の資金力格差が広がった。国は大学の封建性、閉鎖性こそ問題と指摘するが、ノーベル賞学者は短期的な成果のみを求める風潮に警鐘を鳴らしている。今、国立大学は種々雑多な「大学改革」を迫られている。一方、約６００ある私立大学は転機となる「２０１８年問題」の年を迎えた。１８歳人口はこれから一直線に減少する。定員割れの大学が４割に達した。文部科学省は経営困難大学が急増することをにらみ、大淘汰時代でのセーフティネット設計の議論をスタート。瀬戸際に立つ大学の「今」と「これから」を展望する。
