About this listen

Eric Riordan was once a wealthy man leading a comfortable, easy life. Until one day Gabriel, his oldest friend, Marine Corps veteran, and a former mercenary, told him how the world was going to end.

He did his best to prepare. He thought he was ready for anything.

He was wrong.

As the dead rise up to devour the living, one man finds himself struggling to survive in the ruins of a shattered world. Alone, isolated, and facing starvation, his only chance is to flee to the Appalachians and join forces with Gabriel. But the journey will not be easy, and along the way his humanity, his will to live, and his very soul will be tested.

This is the beginning. This is his story.

I am not done with this book, but i felt the need to put out some much needed information that i seemed to have missed in others reviews. The narrator is terrible. He cant do female voices well, at all. I dont expect perfection when a narrator is doing a womans voice, but this guy makes them sound like Jim Carrey doing Vera Di Milo on In Living Color. Actually, half the men get that same narration as well.
The story is decent, and i eventually can focus on that. But man, if the narrator was good i know id really enjoy this book.

A narrator can make or break a book.

This book started out slow for my taste. And the narrator was lacking.
After a slow start, things seem to pick up and there was no turning back from there.
Can't wait for my next credit to continue the saga.

Slow but riveting

Well a little on the how to side and a little stilted in the writing. But got better as it went along. It was worth the sale price.

Meh

A better than average book, but that was about all I can say for it. I don't regret buying it at least

a little better than average

The author can definitely write and tell a story, but for me it was just not that stimulating. The narrator was so-so, there were times I thought he could have used more enthusiasm and vocal inflection especially with the zombie attacks. If part 2 goes on sale I will get it otherwise continuing the series is at the bottom of my list

Meh...okay zombie book

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Great book to pass the time for a long drive. Interesting story line. Good development of the main characters.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Great narrator minus the fact that all the women in the story had a valley girl voice. It could get a little annoying.

Great to Pass the Time

Overall this is a promising storyline, and I look forward to listening to or reading more in this series. Narration was actually better than "good," but I rated it a little lower because some of the characters were voiced in a very unlikable manner. A character who is supposedly quite intelligent for his age and uses words like "albeit" in casual conversation should not be voiced as though he just got off riding a killer mondo wave...dude.

Despite some unfortunate character voices, I like the book and the narrator's overall performance.

Good Story, Good Narration (with Caveat)

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed the story, the only complaint was the narrator. He wasn't bad enough for me to return it, but he makes a lot of the characters sound like surfers or valley girls, and seeing as the story took place in the south, it was really odd and a bit comical.

Good Read, odd narration

Im not completely opposed to zombie stories but the gore and mutilation can be a little much for me sometimes. This book offers a good story of survival with good, intriguing characters and a solid plot without an overwhelming "yuck factor". I could'nt stop listening I just had to find out what would happen next.

Its a great beginning to the series and I look forward to reading more, Ive already downloaded the second. If your sensitive to the hardcore zombie terror of some novels you may like this one for its modest approach to the subject.

Great story and characters. Light on Zombie Gore.
