About this listen

"Brick devotes attention to every voice…His accents and inflections boost the listening experience.” —AudioFile

No greater friend. No deadlier enemy.

The explosive new novel in the New York Times bestselling Orphan X series is flipping the acclaimed series on its head. Find out why series superfans and new listeners alike are calling it a “knockout” (firstCLUE).

Evan Smoak is a highly trained former government assassin who has survived for years by keeping his circle to a few trusted confidants and a strict code he calls “The Ten Commandments.” But when Evan suddenly finds himself at odds with his oldest friend, all the rules he lives by shatter—and the consequences are murderous.

Tommy Stojack might be Evan's best friend in the world. He’s a gifted gunsmith who has created much of Evan's own weapons and combat gear. But now, he has apparently crossed one of Evan's hardest lines and their argument explodes into open warfare. Now Evan has no choice but to track and face down his only friend.

In the meantime, Tommy has left town in order to honor his own promise to help a dead friend's son. While Tommy is fighting to save the son with everything he’s got, Evan arrives with vengeance in mind.

But as deadly as the former Orphan X is, there is an even more dangerous threat about to arrive on the scene. The only question left is will any of them get out alive.

Critic reviews

"Nemesis is an excellent turning point in the Orphan X series with great story arcs that embrace meaningful and engaging themes distinct to each character and also opens the door for an even rawer and emotionally beaten Evan like you would never expect by the end of the narrative. Hurwitz throws a curveball that will leave you stunned for the better part of a day when you finally reach the end."—Best Thriller Books

What to say? My husband and I have listened to all of the Orphan X series together. The book is different than we expected, and that took some getting used to. Tommy is really the main character of this book. We jumped ship and stopped listening for several weeks bc we detested the redneck villains that seemed to have hijacked the story and Tommy. When we picked it back up, the rednecks grew less awful as they were somehow slowly shown to be redeemable victims of domestic chaos and poor to nonexistent parenting.
Throughout the book, it is miserable btw Evan and Tommy— we hated that! Also, there are lots of soul-searching machinations by Evan resulting in his humanizing— not a bad thing, but not very X’y.
The end result was that we were glad we listened, but it was a rough ride.

Not your usual Smoak!

couldn't put it down. I also enjoyed Evan kicking some arse this time around. often "nemesis" means the main character gets hus butt kicked through the whole book.

Can a physical therapist confirm or deny Evan's ability to stretch after injury until he almost passes out from pain but then gets relief? Beyond that pressing question, I so appreciate the many broader themes Mr. Hurwitz layers into his suspense novels, from ethics to emotions to relationships to politics. And I really enjoy his characters, though I'm always wanting Evan's humanity to mature at a faster rate, wanting him to find some peace. And the wait in between books seems very long. This book is as good as any of the previous ones, and I'm already ready for the next.

Good stretch?

What a well layered and crafted story this was. I could not stop listening! I really hate the minimum word requirement. I mean, why?

The characters interacting with each other was so realistic that I had to hit pause for a couple of days. I did not like what was happening because it was so much like life. Mr Brick does such a wonderful job with the characters that I was too connected emotionally.
Thanks Mr Hurwitz for showing the human side of Evan. I knew it was there.

I had to stop listening at one point.

Can't say what I disliked because it will give away to much. But you'll know when you read it.

This book had to be written knowing it would be performed by Scott Brick! One of the best audible books I have listened too and the best narration I have heard.
