Napoléon a-t-il vraiment connu l'amour ? « Rien d'humain ne battait sous ton épaisse armure » a écrit Lamartine au sujet de Napoléon. Et l'on pourrait effectivement douter que cet homme à l'ascension inouïe ait seulement eu le temps de s'adonner au sentiment amoureux.
Pourtant, ceux qui écouteront ce livre n'en douteront plus. Il ne s'est pas contenté de collectionner les conquêtes féminines. Il a été amoureux. Il a vraiment, il a franchement aimé.
Avec naïveté et exaltation, avec brutalité, avec passion, selon son âge et les circonstances. Octave Aubry (1881-1946) est homme de lettres avant d'être historien. C'est sans doute pour cela qu'il « raconte » si bien l'histoire, qui, sous sa plume, se lit comme un roman.
