About this listen

While spending the night in an eerie, decrepit old bungalow in late 19th-century India, the narrator tells how he begins to hear the unmistakable sounds of a billiard game in the locked adjoining room. It's a room that was once a billiard-room where one of the sahibs is said to have died in the midst of a game... and is believed to have become a ghost.

Editorial reviews

Ghosts are everywhere in Rudyard Kipling's short tale My Own True Ghost Story. Performed by noted Shakespearean actor David Ian Davies, the narrator's voice is infused with an intelligent foreboding that lends this spooky story some extra tension. Listeners will enjoy the eerie story of a man who spends the night in a bungalow in late 19th-century India, only to hear the ghostly sounds of a billiard game in the room next door - the very room where a sahib died mid-game. He must act carefully, for, as the narrator notes, "You must behave reverently toward a ghost" - or else, pay the price.

David Ian Davies renders this story beautifully. (Doesn't "victuals" rhyme with "skittles"? Maybe not, for Kipling.) I could listen to this story again and again because of the content and Davies's inviting narration.
