About this listen
Against all odds: Do opposites really attract?
Elizabeth Spaulding demands to be recognized as more than a pretty face. She runs away from an arranged marriage to an odious wealthy suitor. From the moment she arrives in the frontier town of Mooresville, Indiana, challenges confront her. Forced to live in the loft above the mercantile, Elizabeth discovers its manager, Daniel Hadley, is a handsome bachelor who flirts for sport. Elizabeth is determined to resist Daniel’s advances. Any man she lets into her life must love her for her mind and personality.
She soon discovers opportunities to support herself in the frontier are more limited than in her hometown of Albany, New York. Community men disparage her character and confront her physically. How will she survive as an unemployed woman on the frontier unless she agrees to marry?

Gifted author, engaging plot, young reader caution
Sandra Lou is a wonderful author. She has provided an emotionally charged and engaging plot. Sandra employs a prolific vocabulary and historically accurate details. She does a great job developing the characters in the story and allowing them to express their perspective on various situations in the book. Her transition between persons and chapters allows for seamless progression through the story line, so much so that it was hard to put the book down!
As a mom of young ladies, I would issue a word of caution for younger readers (junior high/high school). Because Sandra is such a gifted writer, the vivid mental pcitures that the reader experiences are a bonus in "seeing" the book as you read; however, there are a few situations in the book where this could cause distress or confusion for a younger audience. One such instance is an emotionally stressful and unsafe situation where a young lady is violently confronted by a man. Also due to the romantic nature of the book, there are times when there is an abundance of emphasis regarding a man's thoughts and physical intentions about a woman and a woman's emotional response to physical attention from a man. Obviously all of this review is my personal opinion, but if I were reading reviews to check out potentional books for the young ladies in my home, I would appreciate such candidness. If a young lady would like to read this it would be a great one to read together so these heavier events can be talked through and processed in a safe learning atmosphere.
