Story
We live in a world obsessed with drinking. We drink at baby showers and work events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Yet no one ever questions alcohol’s ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink. It is a qualifier for belonging and if you don’t imbibe, you are considered an anomaly. As a society, we are obsessed with health and wellness, yet we uphold alcohol as some kind of magic elixir, though it is anything but.

Craig Beck is a well-regarded family man with two children, a nice home, and a successful media career; a director of several companies and at one time the trustee of a large children’s charity. Outwardly, Craig was a highly successful and functioning professional man in spite of a ‘two-bottles-of-wine-a-night" drinking habit. For 20 years he struggled to control his drinking, all the time refusing to label himself an alcoholic because he didn't believe he met the stereotypical image that the word portrayed.

What could possibly be “lucky” about addiction? Absolutely nothing, thought Laura McKowen when drinking brought her to her knees. As she puts it, she “kicked and screamed . . . wishing for something - anything - else” to be her issue. The people who got to drink normally, she thought, were so damn lucky. But in the midst of early sobriety, when no longer able to anesthetize her pain and anxiety, she realized that she was actually the lucky one. Lucky to feel her feelings, live honestly, really be with her daughter, change her legacy.

Exactly what I was looking for, ..very helpful...
I listened to many samples of this type of book..not a heavy drinker, but too frequent..like a bad habit at night after 2 jobs ..toying with the idea of quitting but not really feeling that necessity for that..but maybe I will end up there..in any case, I veryuch related to Rose and she is real, and gives excellent tips and im excited about diving in.

Great tool
It's often difficult to find a book that does not solely focus on abstinence. Although this book would help in that arena too, I appreciate her view on moderation and mindful drinking. She's also great to listen to. I'm looking forward to starting my journey.

Helpful not judgey
Finally, someone said out loud how much they are drinking! I’m not alone. This book isn’t full of unobtainable wackiness. It’s real life advice. My whole mindset is changing b/c of this book. With alcohol for sure, but with just a lot of things in life! Get it. Worth a credit. Short and you can re-listen when you need to for a pick me up.

Good Advice
Dean delivers a conversation that is informative and motivational for those who want to reign in their alcohol consumption without quitting altogether. It's good advice given with clear recommendations that, if followed, can help you breakup with your unhealthy relationship with alcohol and replace it with mindful drinking that keeps you in control and leaves you with no regrets in the morning.

Never give up
In a nutshell, Dean's message is never give up. If things aren't working or it gets hard she always has a "try this" idea. She has been through it and knows from whence she speaks. Highly recommended.
