About this listen
The exceptional true story of great dogs, grizzlies, horses, mules, outlaws, and an eccentric frontiersman.
Meet Mr. Grizzly is an exquisite look into the life and adventures of a rural New Mexico ranchman, and one of the best dog books ever written.
Montague Stevens, a brilliantly innovative sportsman set out to train a pack of the best and most well-trained dogs in the history of bear hunting. Humorous and tear-jerking at times, it is a must read for anyone interested in the sport or anyone who loves dogs, horses, and true stories of adventure.
A one-armed Englishman Montague Stevens had a singular approach to the everyday problems of the sportsman and rancher. His hound training and techniques were so far ahead of his time that they are still new and innovative today. And as on a chessboard, he believed that there was a simple solution to every problem encountered and often demonstrated it. For one minor example, upon hearing of several horse thieves in the area he had all of the tails cut off of his horses so that they would be easily identifiable-thus preventing what would have been surely the loss of livestock.
From the Indian-wars, to ranch life, and above all the grizzly hunts, Stevens tells us how it was, with tongue-in-cheek humor and truth that is often stranger than fiction. Meet Mr. Grizzly is a book for the modern sportsman as well as the historian and armchair adventurer. A book to enjoy and pass on to friends and family. For it is truly one of the all-time classics of the old west.

Story
Here is a story which combines the rugged adventure of big game hunting in Texas and little-known facts of wildlife with the factual account of the work of one of Texas’ outstanding outdoorsmen. Texas Lion Hunter is not a biography in the usual sense — it is the exciting account of a man pitting his methodical sureness and knowledge of the Texas wilds against the cunning and deadliness of the predators which range the Texas cattle land. From the time John E. Hearn learns to use his first rifle till the time he tracks down his most elusive ‘‘headlighter.” that two-legged predator ...

Story
From out of these mountains come many things. . . Here is a big game hunting story from the greatest hunting grounds in the world. From a time when they were wholly unknown. Yukon Territory in the 1940's was very much a frontier state with much of what the Jim Bond explored uncharted and unpenetrated except by the occasional prospector and trappers. The first sport hunter in the area, the author provided valuable documentation of how wildlife fares in a wilderness without any human interference as well as relating his exceptional hunting experiences. From Whitehorse, the largest "city" of ...

Story
You are about to go back in time to the Wild West of the 1800s. These true, real-life adventures were told first-hand by Elijah Nicholas Wilson. He was a cavalry spy, hired to track down murdering bands of Indians. Before that he was a stagecoach driver on roads filled with outlaws. Before that he was one of the first Pony Express riders and was chased by Indians who nearly killed him with arrows. And before that he was a bronc buster who accepted a bet to ride the meanest bucking horse in the west.

Story
Anyone who has experienced the thrill of the wilderness cannot get enough. He can only count the days until he is back among the wilds, and his mind eased as only the wilderness can. Jim Bond, who brought us the exceptional story of his wilderness trip in From Out of the Yukon, is back with another series of delightful stories of the north. This time its in Alaska; from the wilds of Kodiak Island, trout fishing along the remote Kulik river, unto the rugged Alaska Range mountain sheep hunting, and down the Alaska peninsula for some "September Crazy" moose rut. Taking place in the 1950's when...

Story
Majestically it rose from the icy waters, the gateway to the awesome wilderness of Alaska. Sitka drew all brand of adventurers, con men, criminals, and pioneers—men such as trail-tough, battle-hardened Jean LaBarge. He left the swamps of the Susquehanna behind for the rugged beauty—and deadly challenges—of this frozen frontier. But the empire-hungry Russians had already established a foothold in Sitka and they wouldn’t give it up without a fierce and treacherous struggle that stretched from San Francisco to the palaces of St. Petersburg.

Glad to see this on audible as I absolutely love this book, the virtual voice is easy to listen to, but it makes a few mistakes here and there.
Would highly recommend to anyone interested in the true west, as well as anyone interested in hounds, horses and hunting. Includes many great stories of frontier life, not just bear hunting.
Maybe the best book I have ever read!
