Karısı Paula bu emre itaat etmek zorunda olmadığına, özgür bir ülkede yaşayan özgür bir insan olduğuna onu ikna etmeye çalışır. Ferdinand'ın Fransa'ya karşı bu savaşta bir piyon olmasını istememektedir.
