 Ambientato in Sicilia in periodo risorgimentale e considerato uno dei capolavori di Verga, "Mastro-don Gesualdo", pubblicato nel 1889, narra la vicenda di Gesualdo Motta, che riesce ad elevarsi dalla posizione di umile manovale a quella di ricco proprietario terriero. Sullo sfondo di un rivolgimento sociale che vede la nobiltà in decadenza lasciar posto ad una classe di nuovi ricchi, il protagonista del romanzo riesce perfino a guadagnarsi il titolo di nobile, "don", grazie al matrimonio con Bianca Trao, che acconsente suo malgrado alle nozze, sia per salvare la famiglia in gravi difficoltà economiche, sia per "riparare" ad una precedente relazione amorosa con un cugino.

Ma Gesualdo, autentico eroe moderno, una sorta di "gigante" in continua lotta contro tutto e tutti, si ritroverà ad essere disprezzato dai parenti della moglie, invidiosi delle sue ricchezze, odiato dalla figlia a causa delle sue umili origini e disprezzato dagli stessi compaesani, i quali durante i moti del 1848, si rivolteranno contro di lui.
