Yemaya, queen of the sea, first emerged in Yorubaland (now in modern Nigeria). A primordial deity, considered the mother of all, she is perceived by some to be at the root of numerous ancient goddesses, including Isis. During the Middle Passage, Yemaya accompanied her enslaved devotees to the Western Hemisphere, where her eventual association with the Virgin Mary helped her veneration take root and flourish.

Hundreds of years ago, the Yoruba people of Nigeria and West Africa were brought to America as slaves. Luckily, they successfully preserved their heritage and ancestral spirits by disguising their deities as Catholic saints. In secret, they worshipped. The result is the new-age religion known as Santería, a blend of Catholicism and African traditional beliefs.

A look at the African Diaspora
this audible book not only told you about Marie, but it teaches you about African diaspora. The story of Marie is explained in a way, back to the people of Haiti and slavery. the people that were enslaved here, the United States, and Caribbean islands, were forced to change names and religion. it also explained America's dark past, where people turned into slaves that were thought to be property. however, africans we're forced into practicing Christianity, as I stated, but they had a little loop hole out due to segregation. when they were forced to "praise the Lord" they would make saints to represent one of the orishas. the old African powers, and God's and goddesses. the orishas are also explained through one the chapters in this audible book. this book is very good for learning about the history of slavery and religions like the Yoruba religions of West Africa. unfortunately since there was no written things about slaves and their history, Marie's past is still mysterious in a lot of ways. I'd write was known, but then I would give away spoilers. I really enjoyed this, and for 99 cents you should add it to your library. it will teach you many things and about history, and also give many details about Marie.
