About this listen

James Martin is a teacher, a powerful psychic, and an alcoholic. He used to work for the Center for Magical Research and Development, a facility that houses people who can’t control their supernatural abilities, but left after one of his students was killed, turning to vodka to soothe his emotional pain. The problem is he still has one year left on his contract.

When James is forced to return to the CMRD, he finds himself confronting the demons of his past and attempting to protect his new class from a possible death sentence, because if they don’t pass their final exams, they’ll be euthanized.

James also discovers that his class isn’t bringing in enough sponsors, the agencies and world governments who supply grants and ultimately purchase graduates of the CMRD, and that means no profit for the facility. James and his students face impossible odds - measure up to the facility’s unreachable standards or escape.

Talk about your inner demons! This book is full of them, not to mention the baggage that each character carries. There is a lot to digest but not too much that it takes away from the story. The author, J.P. Jackson's writing style is fast paced and full of information. As I listened to the book, I became enthralled with the cast of characters and developed (rather quickly) an emotional attachment through the main character James. The narrator did a good job distinguishing the vast number of characters in the story. I am anxiously wanting to read the next segment of this series to see what happens next.

Intriguing Story...

The book just lost me pretty quickly.
The main character had the "broken genius" just on a bit too thick.
I found myself feeling the most sympathy with the bitchy female head of the organization, not sure if that was intended.

The five students all seemed just too extreme for me to take seriously.
They did not really feel like real people to me.

The supernatural stuff just was too excessive in the power level and too lacking in interesting development to keep me interested.
And neither did it really give enough of a secy vibe to compensate.

In summary, there just wasn't anything to keep me going, so I will be returning this.

Too over the top - too little substance
