About this listen
For years, Christians have argued, debated, and fought one another while "speaking the truth in love", yet we are no closer to the grace-filled life Jesus modeled. Biblical scholar and popular podcast host of The Bible for Normal People, Jared Byas casts a new vision for the Christian life that's built not on certainty but on the risk of love.
A biblically based Christian life is not grounded in having all the answers but in a living relationship. This ultimately shifts our focus from collecting the "right" answers to loving others deeply and authentically. With stories and insights drawn from his years as a pastor, professor, and podcast host, Jared Byas calls us back to the heart of the Bible: that truth is only true when it's lived out in love.
In a refreshing voice that's both witty and profoundly revelatory, Jared unpacks the concept of truth, its meaning, and why we so often fight over it. He makes a compelling case for how what we believe is less important than how we believe it and that, more than anything else, telling the truth in love is about following Jesus.
For anyone who has ever felt forced to choose between truth and love, acceptance and rightness, this book offers a path forward beyond truth wars and legalistic religion to a love that matters more.

Story
Life throws us “curve balls”—from devastating personal losses to world tragedies. These events often leave us doubting God, the Bible, and our faith. But instead of pushing away our reservations, we should embrace them, Peter Enns argues. A leading biblical scholar and Christian mentor, Enns has never been afraid to question the Bible or Christian beliefs. Such thoughtful inquisitiveness, he argues, is part of God’s plan. He wants us to question, because doing so actually leads to a stronger, lasting faith.

Story
Behind the scenes of movies like The Ten Commandments, The Prince of Egypt, or Exodus: Gods and Kings is a complicated, and at times, messy biblical story. In this short guide to the book of Exodus, Biblical scholar Peter Enns doesn't just break down the story for the average person to understand but takes us behind the story - to the history and traditions that led us to the story as we have it today. By asking the important questions, and taking us along Moses's and the Israelite journey, Enns brings the best in biblical scholarship to us everyday people.

Story
Jonah’s encounter with a big fish is one of the most widely recognized—and misunderstood—stories in the Bible. In this highly accessible guide to the book of Jonah, Jared Byas invites modern-day listeners to explore the context behind the story and consider the questions Jonah’s early audience faced: questions about the relationship between justice and mercy, what it means to be a worshipper of Yahweh (and who gets to be one), and what happens when God doesn’t act how we would like.

Faith After Doubt is for the millions of people around the world who feel that their faith is falling apart. Using his own story and the stories of a diverse group of struggling believers, Brian D. McLaren, a former pastor and now an author, speaker, and activist, shows how old assumptions are being challenged in nearly every area of human life, not just theology and spirituality.

Story
Millions of Christians have struggled with how to reconcile God's love and God's judgment: Has God created billions of people over thousands of years only to select a few to go to heaven and everyone else to suffer forever in hell? Is this acceptable to God? How is this "good news"? Author, pastor, and innovative teacher Rob Bell presents a deeply biblical vision for rediscovering a richer, grander, truer, and more spiritually satisfying way of understanding heaven, hell, God, Jesus, salvation, and repentance.

On account of the superficial points of agreement between Islam and Christianity, many don't see how tremendously deep the divides between them really are, and fewer still have considered the evidence for each faith. How is jihad different from the Crusades? Can we know the life of Jesus as well as the life of Muhammad? What reason is there to believe in one faith over the other, and what difference can the Gospel really make?

Intellectual certainty has long been a cornerstone of the Christian faith. But in an age of secularism, skepticism, and cynicism, our worldviews have been shaken. Various solutions exist - some double down on certainty, while others deconstruct their faith until there is nothing left at all. But Brian Zahnd offers a third way: What is needed is not a demolition, but instead a renovation of faith. Written with personal and pastoral experience, Zahnd extends an invitation to move beyond the crisis of faith toward the journey of reconstruction.

Love as the guide to following Christ.
I believe this book will help many Christians navigate the uncomfortable decisions surrounding loving people and speaking truth to them. Very helpful in thinking through modern dilemmas that are not immediately clear in scriptures.

Masterclass. Favorite book of 2020
Don’t let the title fool you, this is highly academic look into the interpretation of the bible and God himself. However, it oozes with humility and reads like a compassionate love letter to the dearest of friends. While making well grounded arguments, Jared Byas is never afraid to say the three words I wish all religious leaders would say more, “I don’t know.”
This book is a fresh lens in which to view Christianity and what it means to love in all circumstances. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

A challenging and timely call to love God and others in a time when there is so much divisions among Christians and in our nation at large. Read this book if you feel tension between speaking truth and love. Jared and this book are a gift to the body of Christ as he helps us understand to love as Jesus does.

Clinging to Jesus, while questioning modern religion
A lifeline read If you are looking around at the Church and wondering what the heck is happening. If you were just bopping along thinking all of Christianity was on the same page at least when it came to Jesus, then felt that rug yanked from under you, read it. If you feel alone and lost in your Christian faith because of politics or organized religion, read it. If you are suddenly struggling with family members over faith when you were once aligned, read it. It will convict you to love. I like how much supporting scripture is there. Many excellent insights. Both challenging, and liberating. Shows Jesus as the answer to all of your questions.
