About this listen

Introducing a remarkable new character from number-one New York Times best-selling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the southwestern United States who must confront a new threat...and an old nightmare.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe.

It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared.

She never saw Mercy again.

Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She's the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon.

So when one of the Grand Canyon's mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon - and its rider missing - Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind. But just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she's abruptly called off the case.

If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it....

What listeners say about Long Road to Mercy

Highly rated for:

The Book Starts With An Engaging Premise Of Fbi Agent Atlee Pine Searching For Her Missing Twin Sister Mercy. However, The Storyline Quickly Derails Into An Implausible Conspiracy Involving A Hidden Nuclear Weapon, Russian Collusion With The U.s. Government, And A Potential War Plot. Many Readers Found The Outlandish Plot Points And Atlee's Superhuman Abilities Unrealistic, Making It Difficult To Stay Invested In The Story. The Ending Felt Rushed, Leaving Mercy's Disappearance Largely Unresolved. While Some Enjoyed The New Female Lead Initially, The Over-the-top Narrative And Lack Of Plausibility Disappointed Many Long-time Baldacci Fans.

Second narrator ruins everything

I wanted to like this book. But someone made the decision to use a second, male narrator to voice only the spoken parts said by male characters. The main narrator is fantastic, but the male narrator is terrible! And there's an awkward pause before and after every utterance by a male character. It's very distracting and ruined the book completely. I could not finish it.

Damn, Baldacci is good!

Great story with outstanding narration! LONG ROAD TO MERCY is the best novel that I have read or listened to this year. FBI Special Agent Atlee Pine is a new David Baldacci character and I suspect this the first novel in the Atlee Pine series. Just get Long Road to Mercy and listen to it. You will not regret it.

Male voice poorly done The main narrator was good

Male narrator sounded stiff and as if he did not have any previous experience with reading outloud. .

I’ve found a new character and I love her!

I’m excited to see what comes next for Attlee Pine. Great story, captivating plot, and effective character creation. I’ve read other Baldacci novels and they took me some time before grabbing me. This series however grabs you within the first paragraph making you think, “ok, tell me more.”

Great work here and highly recommended!

Not his best

There is a strange contrast bw the male and female characters here. The women (all 4 of them) have fully realized personalities and enjoyable banter while the men are jarringly stiff and clichéd. I think it might be partly due to the narration but certainly some of the blame lies in the writing. Interesting premise—no spoilers—but so far fetched. I can’t recommend it.

Contemporary story

Great listen. Good story and performance, but Sam the ex army veteran’s voice was a little weak from my listening standpoint.

Spellbinding and engaging suspenseful read!

Looking forward to reading more about Atlee and her adventures. I hope that she is as complex as the author hints.

What happened David Baldacci? Slight spoilers

I don’t know what is more confusing- the meandering story line, the hero who is both the unluckiest and luckiest woman in the world, or the strange dual narration that made the story choppy. First- the story line is long and boring and in no way even a little realistic. I mean from the start it sounds great tracking down the twin’s killer to ...wait why are they on a train?!? Second, our hero is unlucky enough to get into multiple “near assaults” with strangers, but she manages to find one random man in the Grand Canyon- unluckily lucky I guess. Finally the female narrator is great! But then the man chimes in and makes every one of the men sound like a slightly stupid surfer “dude” character from a California surfer movie. I mean I kept waiting for the director of the FBI to say “like...woah...dude”. It was odd and jarring to the flow of the book. Overall- yawn!

Great plot

A great twist on what sounds like it should be inconceivable it all plays out.

First time ever I think Baldacci missed the mak

The protagonist just didn’t click with me. She wasn’t up to his usual standard. All lot of the dialogue seemed remedial. And the big finale was utterly unbelievable. It was like he just got tired of writing the story and said I’m done. The secretary and the shell shock soldier were by far the best characters. Liked Brittany Presley hope she does more of his books.
