About this listen
Little Women
Based loosely on Louisa May Alcott's own upbringing, this American classic follows the lives of four sisters - Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March. Each girl has a vision of what their ideal future will bring, but each ultimately experiences, as most young people do, something completely different.
Little Men
Now married, Jo couldn't be happier. Along with her husband, she operates the Plumfield Estate School. Plumfield is a haven for poor orphans and is attended by 12 adopted boys, as well as Jo's own two sons. Although Plumfield is a place of trust and warmth, the boys occasionally struggle to maintain good manners.

Story
Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel Little Women; Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy (the first of four books) gives us the March sisters in one evanescent year, from Christmas to Christmas, as they dance back and forth on the delicate, tender line between childhood and adulthood. This delightful recording is followed by a fascinating conversation between Anne Undeland and Alison Larkin about Louisa May Alcott’s feminist beginnings and why the famous story is still beloved today. And "Happy Women", an essay Louisa May Alcott wrote for Valentine’s Day 1868.

Story
A country girl named Polly is visiting city friends and comes to realize that this world is quite different than which she has left. Here people are judged according to their dress and manner of speech rather than for their honesty and hard work. Yet all who meet Polly cannot help but be enamored of her; her sweet simplicity is unlike any that they have ever seen, and soon everyone comes to realize that Polly is not someone to be laughed at and ridiculed, but someone to put upon a pedestal for failing to become willing prey to the cynicism of the times.

Told from four-year-old Laura's point of view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her pa, her ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. These stories are merely just a peek into the simple lives of the March family, yet their stories never fail to captivate, endear, and delight. The reader did a fantastic job performing the book and our whole family loved listening.

Charming and Uplifting classics
I first read these books decades ago as a young teen. The narrator does an excellent job at voicing the characters, male and female, young and older. When I first read the books I was totally enthralled and thought how wonderful a family the Marches are. I still think that, but with a more worldly perspective, it is hard to believe that people could be that good all the time. Perhaps during that time period, without the outside influences of media and news, it was easier to focus on your little corner of the world and make the best of what you have.
The sorrow of the Civil War on soldiers’ families is definitely felt. We experience the joys and grief of the family in both stories. If only people could still behave with such morality, and show love and kindness for their fellow man, the world would not be in the mess it is today.
My only gripe is the history of Thanksgiving told to the young people towards the end of “Little Men”. Many of the Native Americans were friendly with the Pilgrims, and they were responsible for teaching the Pilgrims how to farm successfully so they would not starve through another winter. The story states that all the Native Americans were killed because “they gave the Pilgrims trouble”. Perhaps that is what Ms. Alcott believed in the late 1800’s, when this was written. I pray that parents and teachers will correct these historical mistakes when their children/students read this story today. Tolerance and understanding are themes in these stories, and should apply to all people.
