About this listen

An unsettling cold case investigation ensnares Cormoran Strike and his partner in a web of dangerous secrets in this #1 New York Times bestseller, the inspiration for HBO Max's acclaimed series C.B. Strike.

When a troubled young man named Billy asks Cormoran Strike to help him investigate a crime he witnessed as a child, the private eye is left deeply troubled. While Billy is obviously mentally distressed and cannot remember many concrete details, there is something sincere about him and his story. But before Strike can question him further, Billy bolts from his office in a panic.

Trying to get to the bottom of Billy's story, Strike and Robin Ellacott—once his assistant, now a partner in the agency—set off on a twisting trail that leads them through the backstreets of London, into a secretive inner sanctum within Parliament, and to a beautiful but sinister manor house deep in the countryside.

And during this labyrinthine investigation, Strike's own life is far from straightforward. His newfound fame as a private eye means he can no longer operate behind the scenes as he once did. Plus, his relationship with his former assistant is more fraught than it ever has been; Robin is now invaluable to Strike in the business, but their personal relationship is much, much trickier than that.

The most epic Robert Galbraith novel yet, Lethal White is “addictive, murderous fun” for British mystery lovers and crime fiction fans alike (Vox).

Critic reviews

"[Narrator] Robert Glenister has peopled Strike's world with a huge cast that is convincing, horrifying, and funny. Here, as Strike and his partner, Robin, sort out the murder of Britain's awful culture minister, Jasper Chiswell (pronounced 'chisel'), the many greedy, snobbish, cruel faces of evil are human, but the plot and performance are pure magic." "Rowling's wizardry as a writer is on fulsome display in Lethal White (3.5/4 stars), a behemoth of a novel that flies by in a flash. This is a crime series deeply rooted in the real world, where brutality and ugliness are leavened by the oh-so-human flaws and virtues of Galbraith's irresistible hero and heroine."—USA Today

"At times you might feel as you did when reading the Harry Potter books, particularly later in the series, when they got longer and looser. You love the plot, and you love being in the company of the characters, and you admire the author's voice and insights and ingenuity, and you relish the chance to relax into a book without feeling rushed or puzzled or shortchanged.... Long live the fertile imagination and prodigious output of J.K. Rowling."—The New York Times

"If you love the intricate, character-driven mysteries written by Tana French and Kate Atkinson, then chances are good that you'll enjoy the ones by Robert Galbraith. . . . Robert Galbraith knows how to tell a story every bit as deftly as does J.K. Rowling. Cormoran Strike, who lost a leg in Afghanistan, may limp painfully through much of the book, but the tale being told never misses a step."—Joyce Sáenz Harris, Dallas Morning News

The first two books in this series were some of the best detective novels I have read. And so well written. Many wonderfully put together lines like - “She looked away from him, drawing hard on her Rothman’s; when her mouth puckered into hard little lines around the cigarette, it looked like a cat’s anus.” The plots and characters were exceptional. But the third book started downhill, and then kept going. I would not have purchased or listened to this fourth book but for the terrible ending in the third. Mostly, I just wanted to see how a brilliant author would unpaint themselves from that corner. She didn't. It was 22 hours of the same old stuff and reminded me of a television series that just goes on and on without any meaningful tension or plot shift. And, the romance that has escalated and de-escalated too many times to count is unrealistic to listen to any longer.

The Cormoran Strike Series is Dead

I was thrilled to see book 4 had finally come out. After promising myself that I would read it slowly, I devoured it in 2 days. J.K. Rowling is one if the best modern writers, in my opinion.

The best modern writer!!

The first part blazes along with gripping action, well developed characters and settings so well described that you feel like you are there. There is also a great deal of attention paid, very skilfully, to the emotional/romantic aspects of this series. But the last few chapters use a time-worn device where the protagonist decides to bare his/her soul rather than simply disposing of the hero/heroine. This device is used to tie together all the loose ends of the plot. It's a lazy technique, and it seems like the author had had enough of this novel, and wanted to move on.

I would still recommend this one, but with reservations and sorrow for how much better it could have been.

Like JK Rowling got tired at the end.

I absolutely love, LOVE this series and this latest installment is no exception. Absolutely brilliant, perfectly cozy, and love the narrator.

My favorite series

I Really enjoyed the first 2 books in this series,so I looked forward to this one. Unfortunately, the book was really slow to get going, and I was lost by the many subplots. While there was eventually some fun suspense, I found the end an unsatisfying fizzle. Oh well.

It didn’t do it for me

This book was great! I had a really difficult time stopping my listening to do normal life and work things. The narrator is fantastic and the story, characters, and twists and turns were really very engaging. Robin’s character has some serious self esteem and self love issues, but you get to see her grow throughout the book. I genuinely did not see the end coming at all. The narrative weaves through politics, family dynamics, relationship dynamics, the many ways that people think and act, money, and class. I don’t want to spoil anything so I’m being quite vague, but this is super worth a credit if you enjoy mystery.

Really Excellent

I love this series. It never disappoints.
The story is exciting from the beginning to the end. I hope this is the beginning for Stryker and Robin.

Wonderful

Let's face it, I'm grieving over not having more of Cormeron and Robin, I was so anxious to get the next installment I accidentally bought a French version. Pre-ordered, so I couldn't tell by a sample. Obviously, I'm in trouble here!

Where's the next in the series???

I'm so sad I finished it so fast. The narrator is truly talented. Had me guessing the whole time, loved it!

Brilliant as the others!
