About this listen

From the Amazon Charts and New York Times bestselling author of The Shadow Box and Last Day comes a breathtaking thriller about a family shaken by lies, vengeance, and a cold-blooded crime.

A fierce blizzard is burying the eastern seaboard, but on the icy Rhode Island shore renowned artist Maddie Morrison finds warm sanctuary from a contentious divorce at the legendary Ocean House. Hours later, her body is found buried under a blanket of snow and her little daughter, CeCe, has disappeared without a trace.

For Detective Conor Reid; his brother, Tom, a coast guard commander; and Maddie’s grieving sister, Hadley, the posh hotel becomes ground zero for an investigation. Trapped by the blizzard, they must hunker down and determine who in the young mother’s life could have possibly wanted her dead. There are stories of a twisted romantic past. Of old jealousies and resentments that still cut to the bone. And a history of greed, rage, and revenge that created the perfect storm for murder. A storm that has just begun.

“Take a deep breath and dive into this foreboding tale set on Rhode Island’s seashore.”Kirkus Reviews

“A story about the local community, jealousies, and greed.”Library Journal

“The action is nonstop, but that doesn’t overshadow the human connections between key players and the possibly suspect secondary characters… Fans of Nora Roberts, Sheryl Woods, and Robin Carr will enjoy Rice's latest.”Booklist

Best mystery/romance ever

I had mixed feelings on this book. Too much talking versus action in the story. The first half of the book went very slowly. It wasn't as much drama or really even a murder mystery, more family secrets, lies, greed and drama. I didn't feel vested in any of the characters or their roll in the story. It's a good thing the cop was staying at the hotel or the murder might never have been solved. This story could have been so much more.

More drama and lies than murder mystery

Loved the storyline. Had a problem with the male narrator….he was so choppy and ‘growly’ in his narration.

Engaging story.

OK narration; interesting story setting; weird unbelievable ending. Author seemed rushed to finish the narrative.

I love a good mystery murder story. This one in particular was a really good read. From the way the story moves along to the surprise twist of finding out who the killer was. I swear I thought I figured it out and then right there at the end was a nice little gotcha! Moment. I hate when you can guess who the killer was early on, it doesn’t make the read to fun anymore.

The part the got me the most in this book was the kid. She was so brave and smart. God forbid something like this happen you’d hope to be as brave as this little girl.
Overall, very good read. So many parts and people involved made the puzzle enjoyable.

The art of dying
