Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

On January 21, 1998, the night before his 38th birthday, federal prosecutor Stanley Alpert was kidnapped by a car full of gun-toting thugs. Hoping to make a large withdrawal with his ATM card, they took him, blindfolded, to a Brooklyn apartment, and improvised. All night, his captors alternately held guns to his head, threatened his family, engaged him in discussions of "gangsta" philosophy, sought his legal advice, and even offered him sexual favors from their prostitute girlfriends as a "birthday present."

Thought-provoking!
Poignant story of how children cope with traumatic experiences.
It also gives thought-provoking statistics on the new opioid prescription laws. As usual where the law convicts the guilty it fails to protect the innocent.

I loved it!
Robert Thornhill has such a wonderful writing style and writes entertaining and thought provoking books. As a child I loved the song Puff The Magic Dragon, and thought he did an incredible job of tying it into this book. He weaves strong messages into the stories that deal with current events, yet magically has them mesh into the characters lives. George Kuch performance is brilliant with his various character voices. I love how this book is part of a series and a great standalone listen. This is one of my very favorite books by the author.

Lady Justice and the Magic Dragon
Domestic violence and abuse are very serious topics. Robert Thornhill does them justice in this book while still infusing his bits of humor. Walt once again finds himself in the right place at the right time to make a difference and help out Lady Justice.
Another fine listen, performed by George Kuch.

Liked the listen but not my favorite in the series
I've listened to a few Lady Justice books and have enjoyed them all. This installment was good but did not rank very high with the others.
I didn't really get the use of the "Puff, the magic dragon" imagery. Whether the famous song is about drug use or childhood innocence, I was completely lost right out the gate. I mean, Puff died or at the very least, no longer existed in the song. The fact that kids used the song for comfort was completely lost on me.
I love Walt and his cast of characters so I stayed with the listen. The narrator is Walt and he ratchets up the special. I liked the listen but it wasn't my favorite.

A poignant mystery with plenty of humor!
There are so many important topics and stories being told, yet there is humor and mystery & bravery at the same time. Robert Thornhill has a gift for telling stories which are thought provoking & thrilling at the same time. This book covers many smaller plots, but the overarching theme was how abuse affects everyone involved; the kids, the spouse, and friends/family. The beauty of this series is that it’s handled so delicately with honesty, humor & a cast of characters you will instantly love!

humor saves from reality
abuse, abusive-spouse, kidnapping, private-investigators, childhood-trauma, situational-humor, verbal-humor
The first thing a reader needs to know about any of the books in the series is that there is an abundance of humor. The second is that the humor is there to offset some rather severe realities. Brought into the sunlight this time are domestic violence and the damage it does to children and the non abusive parent. As a nurse, I do wish that it had been mentioned that sometimes that behavior is passed on and sometimes it leads to drug problems. But I give it high marks for what it does do. There are other issues addressed as well, and they are managed very, very well indeed.
George Kuch continues to be exceptional as narrator.

Loved it!
The author provided me with a complimentary copy of this audiobook with no expectation of a review. This book touches on some very difficult issues that sadly are all too common today. I listened to this book in one sitting. I kept thinking "I'll just finish this chapter" but when I got to the end of that chapter I wanted to know what happened next. That's been true with every book in this series LOL. Needless to say, it's been the cause of many sleepless (but oh so enjoyable) nights.
