In ambito letterario, ha esordito vincendo il Premio Strega 1996 col romanzo Bella vita e guerre altrui di Mr. Pyle, gentiluomo. Fra i suoi libri più noti si possono citare i saggi Caporetto (2017), Dante (2021) e Brick for stone (2023).
