About this listen

A beautiful story of a woman who succeeded in living an authentic life in the 18th century. Cueto tells the story with such rich detail that I can see her also. The narrator also added to the aura of the story. I loved it!

The almost mythological figure springs to life
This is the first work by Alonso Cueto that I have read. Wow! I hated that it ended. I so thoroughly fell in love with the woman he so carefully paints for us with his loving brush - the writers pen. Throughout the years she has been referenced and each time I wanted to know more. Thanks to this Cueto’s labors in researching and artfully rendering Micaela Villegas and her times. She is the heroine that captivates and charms. Surely some will frown at the age difference between the Virrey and La Perricholi but this is a time with different norms and mores thus requiring the suspension of sensitivities. What does stand the test of time is the story of the woman. She fills a life with struggles and to each of these challenges she grabs the bull by the horn and gives as good as she gets. She is mestizo, she is a woman, she’s an unconventional spirit when all of these traits were on the “con” side of the list and yet she rises triumphant. This is a story to raise your daughters on. Loved it!!
