 22 Juin 1941. A 4 heures du matin, Staline est réveillé par le général Joukov : "C'est la guerre !". La frontière germano-soviétique s'embrase sous les coups de l'artillerie allemande. L'invasion de l'Union soviétique par l'Allemagne nazie, nom de code Opération Barbarossa, vient de débuter. Ce fut la plus grande opération militaire allemande de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
Face à une Armée rouge de 4 millions de soldats et 170 divisions, l'armée allemande aidée de ses alliés finlandais et roumains, compte près de 3 millions d'hommes, 3 600 chars et 4 200 avions. Les envahisseurs capturent en quelques semaines 600 000 soldats soviétiques ainsi que des milliers de chars. Dès le premier jour de l'invasion, les chars allemands, les Panzers, progressent de 60 kilomètres à l'intérieur du pays. Dans le même temps, l'aviation allemande, la Luftwaffe, détruit 1 800 avions soviétiques.
