About this listen

As a cartography student, Jak has always dreamed of finding the lost dragon gate and exploring and mapping distant worlds.

Developing magical powers and becoming a powerful wizard? Not a chance.

Wizards are cruel and inhumane, warring with each other from their great sky cities and keeping most of humanity enslaved. Jak wants nothing to do with them.

But when he and his archaeologist mother unearth the gate, they attract the attention of the very wizards they sought to avoid. Even more troubling, Jak starts developing magical powers of his own, powers that could rival those of the great rulers.

Fate may have given him the opportunity to change the world.

But the wizard rulers don’t like change, and when they detect threats, they send their elite assassins to eliminate them.

If Jak can’t unlock the power of the gate, and the powers within himself, the world will remain enslaved forever.

I really like the layout of the story. The flow of each event was smooth and didn’t feel too rushed or too slow. My one complaint is not enough power development for Jack. In the summary of the book, it is said that Jack has magic that can rival the rulers yet all he can pretty much do is barely manage to interact with the artifact and use its power.

Jack’s mother is smart and good at making weapons out of liquids in bikes. I was annoyed that in the entire story, they are running away from one enemy and they keep getting caught or the Zadar just mind reads them.

Spoilers!!!!!!
In the very end of the book, Jack and his mother escape with the artifact and are traveling many miles away the enemy that have kept them captive for the entire story. It seems as if they finally have some peace and quiet when Jack’s mother gets a dream. Malech, the Zadar that they have been running away from them visits her and just simple asks where they are going. I remind you that they are literally in a different continent yet they still can’t escape the grasp of this one magic user.

Vivienne did a great job narrating and the story had a good flow to it, yet not very much power development. By no means am I asking for Jack to become overpowered but let him be able to do more than manipulate the artifact when he needs protection or help.

Story was good but not enough development

If you have not listed/read a Lindsay Buroker book here's a few things to keep In mind. the 1st book in each series is a bit slow characters are introduced and formed for about little over half the 1st book in each series trust me stick with it because they take off a grab hold of you. the story comes to life the characters you'll want to know more about and what's going to happen another words you'll be hooked I promise. Buroker has the best imagination and development of a story and characters she's one of my ALL time favorite authors. you ALWAYS get action, suspense, light romance, and lots of humor well balanced. Death before Dragons is my favorite of all Buroker's series. pick anyone of her series and you'll get a fantastic read/listen. I do highly recommend listening to the books the narrators are the best Leheny dose a great job with her performance so don't miss out listening she brings this book to life. can't wait for more.

Some scenes a bit too graphic for my taste, but few and not unrealistic. A sobering reminder of sexual slavery that still exists in our reality. A great start to a new series. Heart pounding action and an unpredictably thrilling plot. Looking forward to the next book in this series. Jadora and Malek are shaping up to become a new version of a Sicarius and Amaranthe romance, which I will be delighted to read about developing. Their loyalties and goals may be divided now, but I predict they become allies and lovers in the end.

Wonderfully thrilling!

Another Great Story by Lindsay Buroker. Her stories always have strong women and a great mix of badass warriors, quirky nerds, and an epic quest. This story did not disappoint. The narrator is fantastic.

Excellent Story and Narration

I was hooked in the first 15 minutes! The Dragon Blood series were the first audio books I listened to, and I've been hooked on Lindsay's many series ever since. I love your characters, strong female lead roles, and all the slow romance. I just finished the series, so naturally, I am listening all over again! And Vivienne Leheny reading just takes me into a whole world. She is truly gifted storyteller. The whole world disappears as she shares these stories...TAKE MY MONEY! I could listen forever....Thank you Ladies!

I <3 Lindsay!!!!

I just came from reading the Cradle Series, which is a fast moving cultivation book. I loved that, but was looking for something that was slower, more political, and darker. the audible version is not as great with one narrator voice, but it was still enjoyable. only was a problem when there was like 3+people of the same sex talking. It was exactly what I was looking for. Although some of the conversations were maybe unnecessary and the combat wasn't always as descriptive as I would like, the pacing was good. At first I thought it might be too dark, but then later throughout the book I founding myself wanting the story to include the more risky, not politically correct aspects and wishing for characters to have even darker pasts. Overall I hope this series goes long. I feel the foundation is strong that the subsequent books will be better.

Great, interesting characters, a solid foundation

Couldn't stop listening to this audible book. Long for more. Storyline put me right in the midst of all of it. My emotions were overwhelmed at times.

Unbelievably Wonderful

This is a great series, and I have really enjoyed it - Well written; great female narrator; good story arc over a long series of separate books. I definitely recommend all of these books. This is the first of the series and probably the slowest getting started, but it is all set up for the rest of this great series. Well worth listening to all of these.

Well done
