About this listen

Jack Gentil underestimated the level of suffering he would witness in an American firefighter’s uniform. The proverbial curtain of society was ripped back, revealing pain he was unable to turn away from. When those demons began to perforate his psyche, he embarked on a journey to save his own life.

Kinder gives us a gripping and raw insight into the life of a first responder, an opportunity to see through an invaluable lens that few will ever experience first hand. More importantly, it’s a story of hope and redemption.

James takes you on duty with Jack and all.of the characters introduced in Kinder. As a veteran and first responder, I was stricken by James' ability to walk me through the scenes, complete with the sights, sounds, and smell. this book was fantastic and paints a complete relatable picture of the cost, and the price paid by those who live a life of service. Bravo, mate.

the entire book is incredible!

Wow, what a well-written story, James. You could be the next Quentin Tarantino. I was amazed by the storyline and how you were able to incorporate so many different stories, along with the various issues and problems we face today, into this excellent book. When I first opened it and saw how the dates jumped all over, I thought, 'What is going on here?' But then, as I picked it up and started reading, I didn't put it down. By the way, I was just floored by how well done this story is. James, you covered so many issues that face our society. I applaud you for it. I genuinely recommend this book to anybody who enjoys reading history or firefighting. I am a firm believer, and I also remember past lessons learned, so we don't repeat them. I hear that this might become a TV series or be brought to the big screen; either way, I can't wait. Keep up the great work. Thank you very much for writing this book.

Reveals the heartbreaking side of the fire service and life. On the surface, tv shows and social media reveal life’s highlight reels limiting our ability to actually see the depths of our fellow humans. This story destroys the norm with real examples of how traumas in our lives not spoken or addressed can bring pain to multiple generations. This story demonstrates that with self work, specifically post traumatic growth, life’s challenges can indeed make us stronger, more compassionate, and better people for ourselves and loved ones. James has reignited my passion for the fire service and I will without a doubt be a stronger fire captain, husband, and father due to the reflection and personal relation this book gave me. As the Brits say, main character is a Brit, bloody brilliant!

Beautifully Traumatic, my New #1 Book Ever Read!

James, you have done an outstanding job again. As I listened to the audio book version of “Kinder,” I was so drawn into the characters and the depth to which you developed them. Your narrative, including in depth descriptions of various emergency calls that made me feel like I was right there or reminded me of similar calls, was SO powerful.
The emotional energy, time, and creative courage you poured into this book is revealed in each and every chapter. THANK YOU for sharing this!

A first responder “must read!”
