About this listen
In 1930s England, Jessie Harper finds herself caught up in the latest case of the Dale Street Private Investigations Agency. Along with her partner George Jenkins, and Khan, the talking cat with magical powers, she sets off to London to solve the mystery of the kidnapped pedigree cats and the wealthy socialites who have received ransom demands for their beloved pets.
But this case is unlike any they've faced before. Khan has gone undercover to gather information. Detective Sergeant Bill Roberts, Jessie’s mentor, is seconded from the Liverpool City Police to lead the investigation in London.
As they delve deeper into the case, they discover a web of deceit and danger that threatens to unravel everything they know. The stakes are high as they race against time to find the missing cats before it's too late. The team quickly finds itself in over their heads as it navigates the dangerous streets of Clerkenwell, London. But with Khan's help and Detective Sergeant Roberts' expertise, the team starts to piece together the clues that will lead to the kidnappers.
With its blend of paranormal intrigue, cozy mystery elements, much Khan humour, and romantic tension between Jessie and George, this fourth instalment in the Jessie Harper series is sure to captivate listeners until the very end.

I listened to the audio version of the book, and the narrator did a good job bringing the characters and period setting to life. The pacing was solid, and the voices were distinct enough to keep the story flowing smoothly.
I really enjoyed seeing Jessie and George’s relationship grow, it added warmth to the mystery. Their partnership, along with Detective Sergeant Bill Roberts, created a strong investigative team. The London setting added a fun twist, especially as they navigated the more dangerous corners of Clerkenwell.
That said, I still couldn’t quite get past Khan, the talking magical cat. While I know he’s a staple of the series and adds a bit of humor, I struggled to suspend my disbelief with his role in the investigation. His presence pulled me out of the mystery at times rather than enhancing it.
Overall, it’s a fun listen if you enjoy cozy mysteries with a whimsical twist. Longtime fans of the series will likely enjoy this chapter in Jessie and George’s journey, but if magical talking animals aren’t your thing, it might not quite hit the mark.
