About this listen
If you want to discover the captivating life of Jesse James, then pay attention....
In the minds of many Americans, the name of Jesse James and the Wild West are practically synonymous. The bank robberies, with bullets flying from one side to the other of a dusty little town of the American frontier; the daring train robberies, with locomotives being chased by horses and forced to make a halt only to be boarded by gentlemanly bandits; the spectacular escapes of horse riders camouflaged by long coats, firing two revolvers, one in each hand. All these are episodes that correspond to the life of Jesse James, that notable son of Missouri. In this sense, he is a vital and representative part of American history and life.
Jesse James was a robber, a murderer, and a notorious outlaw, who carried as many weapons as he could. He could shoot with both hands while he held the reins of his horse in his teeth. He was an extremely popular man in his day, a phenomenon that he readily accepted because he was a person who craved attention. He supposedly gave part of his booty to the poor, although no evidence of this can be found except in folklore.
In Jesse James: A Captivating Guide to a Wild West Outlaw Who Robbed Trains, Banks, and Stagecoaches Across the Midwestern United States, you will discover topics such as:
- A Boy Named Jesse
- Back Home
- An Unlikely Ally
- Northfield: A Watershed
- Man Named “Howard”

Billy the Kid once said that he killed 22 men - one for each year that he lived. While it’s more likely that he only killed eight or nine, this young outlaw was clearly deadly. But his brief and brutal life reveals how his tragic existence led him into a life of crime. After growing up in poverty as an Irish immigrant in New York City and losing his father at a young age, Billy the Kid had to endure losing his mother when he was only 15.

His name was Geronimo. And any mention of that name immediately conjures up images of the last gasp of Native American control of the Western Frontier. Geronimo, to be sure, was one of the most effective leaders in the resistance against America’s westward advance, but he was much more than just a good field commander for the Apaches. For even after the West was supposedly won, Geronimo proved more than ready to adapt. In this book, you will get the full picture of Geronimo: the good, the bad, and the downright incredible.

Deadwood, 1876: a notorious little mining town in modern-day South Dakota that was a hive of criminal activity. Thieves, drunkards, prostitutes, and murderers ran rampant among its booming streets. There were over 300 murders in this town during the first year of its existence. When Wild Bill Hickok was brutally shot and killed at point-blank range in the back of the head, it was obvious that someone had to rise up and save the town of Deadwood from itself.

Story
If, as historian Thomas Carlyle said, the history of the world is but the biography of great men, then it is also true that the story of the great men is a parable of their times, places, and generational aspirations. The life of Davy Crockett, one of the most cherished and remembered American frontiersmen, is an accurate representation of the United States as it stretched westward to become one of the largest nations in the world. Yet, David Crockett was not a mythical character but a very real person.

Although one can speak of Thomas Jefferson in a tediously factual way, he was an enigma. Historically, he is noted for writing the Declaration of Independence, which was a daring and courageous statement of the rights of Americans and, indeed, of all people. Hidden beneath the many cloaks of legalistic terminologies that he was fond of using, all the strengths and vulnerabilities of Jefferson as a man were there, too. Like many people of today, he had a difficult childhood. He also liked to party while in college and loved to play the fiddle.

Elizabeth Tudor, daughter of the ill-fated Queen Anne Boleyn and temperamental King Henry VIII, was never meant to rule the country. Yet, when her time came, she didn’t stumble under the weight of the English crown. Elizabeth was perhaps the most intelligent, forward-thinking monarch who ever sat on the throne before or since. Her reign is responsible for the strength of the Royal Navy, the cultivation of fine arts, the long-term stability and safety of her nation from foreign attacks, and the first steps toward international colonization.

A life that ended as it was lived
A famous or infamous outlaw that was one of the most talked about rebels of his time revered by some as a modern-day Robin Hood and hated by others as a murderer, robber, and outlaw. The story of Jesse James is an example of how circumstances can make a person. His life was rough from the start growing up in Missouri and he saw things that would make anybody go crazy but I'm not excusing his acts. Weirdly, this man married his 1st cousin that was named after his cousin! Started rolling with the top crowd and joined the rebels and outlaws along with his brothers. They then began robbing banks killing people and pillaging. He executed the first known instance of a train robbery. He truly made everywhere he went the Wild Wild West. A truly mythic figure in history and a conflicted person overall. Was he just in it for the money or was there some political agenda? The narration in the book is done well as there is a British / English man narrating. A pretty short listen / read. Of course the man was the inspiration for the Road Dogg Jesse James name as part of the New Age Outlaws in WWF. Cool story that really transports you to those times and gives you a feeling of how it was to live in those times without insurance in banks and that seems quite primitive by today's standards. Jesse James' life ended as it began and just as he lived it, in violence.

Hero or Villian
Bank and train robber is he a hero? Murderer? Maybe even a Robinhood of his day, the jury is out with that answer. A brutal incounter with Union soldiers started Jesses on his eventual path. He joined a brutal gang and later formed one of his own. Many people had many different views on Jesse. In the end he was betrayed and many had mixed feelings about that. A good read.

Where did all the money go?
This little summary of the life of one of the most notorious of the old west's outlaws is worth the few minutes of easy listening needed to learn many astonishing facts and some of the fictions built on the life of Jesse James. "Where did all the money go?" is about the only question I have left after listening to this well-read audiobook. It is difficult to believe that all of the millions (in today's currency values) that he and his gang stole were just gambled away and spent on riotous living by a dozen or so outlaws in the old west. It is easy to see why some believe Jesse Robin Hooded some of it away to others less fortunate.

Jesse James was no hero!
Jesse James was a brutal killer, thief & Confederate sympathizer.
I had not known that last bit until listening to this book, but modern Neo-Confederates still do, and venerate him to this day.
My advice: Find better folk heroes. IDK, maybe Billy the Kid (also available from “A Captivating Guide” publishing.)
