About this listen

Magda Aklyan leads her tiny Exodus flotilla through unmapped Boca do Inferno, then on through more star systems on the way to sanctuary and forever war in exile. Jahandar grows from cruel and plague pocked boy into a murderous revolutionary, then the sole leader of the Dauran Empire after killing the old emperor and his entire family with a laser axe, then all other revolutionary leaders. He rips worlds and peoples and the lives of his own family apart, while installing the most savage terror regime in all the histories of the Thousand Worlds. He ultimately claims the mantle of a living god to his people. Is he malevolent or deranged, or both? The vile boy that he was, young Soso, haunts him hourly, clawing at him from inside, trying to climb through and out and take him over. He is ever more physically and morally corrupt as excess doses of the drug ‘suspend’ stretch him far past any normal lifespan. He reaches with mass murder into the past to repurpose and retell it, and into the future to control or destroy it. He is menace incarnate. And now he is coming back into Orion after fifty years of total isolation inside his terrorized and terrifying Dauran Empire.
Pyotr continues his mop-up war against the holdout worlds of the defeated United Planets. Leaders of the Calmar Union disagree over whether to support the Krevans or betray them. They worry that Pyotr may attack them next, and start to prepare for war. But they’re badly divided. The prime minister and top intelligence leaders dither. Can Georges Briand and the War Hawk faction take control? No one knows that Pyotr conspires with Jahandar to crush all the western star states from two directions in a Dual Alliance of aggressive empires.

The betrayal arrives. Pyotr and Jahandar coordinate multiple invasions. Twenty more worlds are under assault by orbital bombardment and follow-on dropships full of barbarians. Krevans fire tokomaks in despairing defense, tearing apart their own skies and ruining their last worlds, lost to Jahandar and destined to become his newest ‘Dead Souls.’ Calmaris are reeling from being hit by the Imperium and Dauran Empire across twenty border systems. Huge battles are waged and quickly lost, including a ground assault along the eastern half of the supercontinent Lemuria on Amasia. General Lian Sòng entrenches pole-to-pole down 23,000 klics of continental spine and holds onto two small moons out of five. No help is coming. Only one order reaches her: “Hold on until relieved.” The Krevan War is over. The Fourth Orion War is just beginning. It’s not going well, unless you are Pyotr and Jahandar.
