About this listen
The American electoral system is clearly falling apart - as evidenced by the 2016 presidential election. In It's Time to Fight Dirty, David Faris offers accessible, actionable strategies for American institutional reform which don't require a constitutional amendment, and would have a lasting impact on our future.
With equal amounts of playful irreverence and persuasive reasoning, Faris describes how the Constitution's deep democratic flaws constantly put progressives at a disadvantage, and lays out strategies for "fighting dirty" though obstructionism and procedural warfare: establishing statehood for DC and Puerto Rico; breaking California into several states; creating a larger House of Representatives; passing a new voting rights act; and expanding the Supreme Court.
The Constitution may be the world's most difficult document to amend, but David Faris argues that many of America's democratic failures can be fixed within its rigid confines - and, at a time when the stakes have never been higher, he outlines a path for long-term, progressive change in the United States.

America is undergoing a massive experiment: It is moving, in fits and starts, toward a multiracial democracy, something few societies have ever done. But the prospect of change has sparked an authoritarian backlash that threatens the very foundations of our political system. Why is democracy under assault here, and not in other wealthy, diversifying nations? And what can we do to save it?

Story
While America is at a crossroads regarding its economic future, many of us don’t fully understand how we got here. In this powerful and accessible book, Thom Hartmann demystifies neoliberalism and outlines the impact that it has had on America, looking at different sectors, including healthcare, unemployment, and education. Hartmann highlights how America can go one of two ways: continue going down the road to neoliberal oligarchy, as supported by the GOP, or return to FDR’s Keynesian economics, raise taxes on the rich, reverse free trade, and create a more pluralistic society.

How, Peters asks, did conservative values that Republicans claimed to cherish, like small government, fiscal responsibility, and morality in public service, get completely eroded as an unshakable faith in Donald Trump grew to define the party?

Why the Right Went Wrong offers a historical view of the right since the 1960s. Its core contention is that American conservatism and the Republican Party took a wrong turn when they adopted Barry Goldwater's worldview during and after the 1964 campaign. Since 1968, no conservative administration could live up to the rhetoric rooted in the Goldwater movement that began to reshape American politics 50 years ago.

Story
Control of the country is up for grabs - and Republicans have been rigging the game in their favor. Twenty-two states have passed restrictions on voting. Ruthless gerrymandering has given the GOP a long-term grip on Congress. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has eviscerated campaign finance laws, boosting candidates backed by big money. It would be worrying enough if these were just schemes for partisan advantage. But the reality is even more disturbing.

Story
Democracies can die with a coup d'état - or they can die slowly. This happens most deceptively when in piecemeal fashion, with the election of an authoritarian leader, the abuse of governmental power and the complete repression of opposition. All three steps are being taken around the world - not least with the election of Donald Trump - and we must all understand how we can stop them.

Title is misleading
The title of this book would lead one to believe that this is merely a partisan hack job. Make no mistake, it does have a strong message for Democrats, but I found it more to be about the actual mechanics of the US system of government and how it has been and can continue to be manipulated by those in power to ensure they stay in power. Sure to disillusion any idealist.

Voiced frustrations of a long time liberal
An excellent book with some great advice for frustrated liberals, progressives, and democrats. A must read. Despite the title, Dems don't need to fight dirty, but they will need to work hard. I think this book offers some very realistic solutions about how to save our country from its worst impulses. I can only hope those with power will take this book's adbice seriously. I will be spreading this info to whomever I can!

Sobering and serious analysis, humorous delivery
If only a few of the ideas put forth in this book were implemented, our country would be in significantly better shape. Faris' analysis masterfully brings together the related structural and procedural battles that progressives have lost, and explains how to fight back. most importantly, if you take seriously, say, the threat of climate change and the criminal inaction by the GOP, this book does not shy away from some of the more radical solutions towards reforming our political system so that we can actually address the monumental problems we face. Faris' writes in clear, funny prose. Enjoyable and inspiring.

How to save Democracy
I have listened and re-listened to this book. Lots of info. Lots of history. Lots of suggestions.
I. Heard references to Ayn Rand. Or she and her followers organizations. You have to know what the other side is made up of to know why the Republican Party became an anti-system party. On the Supreme Court, you need to know what effects of Dred Scott has had on the US. Civil War, the 13th Amendment, the 14 Amendment, the 15 Amendment, the 16th Amendment, the 19th Amendment, the 23rd Amendment, the 25th Amendment, the Voting Rights Act of 1965. All these needed to be done to negate one Conservative Supreme Court Ruling.

Must Read
I loved the book as well as the specific ways portrayed in it for how Democrats can actually beat GOP's a** each and every time. Unfortunately, even as good as it sounds, Dems will never actually implement any of this. US would've been such a better place if Dems could actually fight back and actually cared for their own constituency.
