当初は防衛上の拠点だった城は、将軍や武士の住まいとしても使われるようになり、当時の日本では、自分の城を持つことはステータスでした。
そのため、日本全土が戦乱に明け暮れた戦国時代以降、各地の大名たちの間で城を築くのがブームになりました。
やがて戦乱の世が終わり平和な江戸時代になると、城を中心に「城下町」と呼ばれる町が造られ始めます。現在の東京も、江戸城の城下町として発展してきたのです。
