Food samples are the plastic models of food that you see in glass cases outside restaurants.
レストランの店頭のガラスケースに展示されている食品サンプル。その第1号は1917年に登場したオムレツでした。
当時の日本は外食ブームで、客が注文前に料理を確認できる食品サンプルは、あっという間に全国の料理店に広まりました。
当初の食品サンプルは蠟で作られていましたが、現在はプラスチック製で、職人がひとつひとつ手作業で作っています。
食品サンプルを最初に作った職人は、臓器など医療関係の模型などを作っていた人々だったそうです。
本物そっくりの食品サンプルを作るには、最低でも2〜3年の修業が必要だといわれています。
現在は食品サンプルを作る技術で、食品の形をしたキーホルダーやキャンドル、USBメモリなども作られています。
