 The Gion Matsuri, held over one month in July every year in Kyoto, is one of the three biggest festivals in Japan. 毎年7月に1ヵ月にわたって京都で行われるのが、日本三大祭りの一つの祇園祭です。2009年にはユネスコの無形文化遺産にも登録されました。
八坂神社の祭礼である祇園祭は、疫病退散を願って行われた行事がルーツで、1100年以上の歴史があります。
祇園祭には数多くの行事がありますが、特に有名なのが「山鉾巡行」です。
山鉾とは巨大な山車のことで、飾りが豪華なことから「動く美術館」として知られています。祇園祭では33もの山鉾が登場し、京都の中心部を練り歩きます。
また、山鉾巡行の前3日間の、「宵山」の日には、すべての山鉾が町なかに勢揃いし、訪れた人たちは一部の山鉾に上がることができます。
