Cat Winters
In 1918, the world seems on the verge of apocalypse. Americans roam the streets in gauze masks to ward off the deadly Spanish influenza, and the government ships young men to the front lines of a brutal war, creating an atmosphere of fear and confusion. Sixteen-year-old Mary Shelley Black watches as desperate mourners flock to séance and spirit photographers for comfort, but she herself has never believed in ghosts. During her bleakest moment, however, she's forced to rethink her entire way of looking at life and death, for her first love - a boy who died in battle - returns in spirit form. But what does he want from her? This is a tense, romantic story set in a past that is eerily like our own time.

I really enjoyed this book! I'm definitely an "old soul" that loves learning about the early 1900s-1940s so I was intrigued by this book when I found out the story took place around my favorite decade (the 1920s). I knew there had been an influenza that had hit our country at one time but I had no idea that it had happened around the 20s. Cat Winters did a great job of transporting the reader to that time of struggle when so many were fighting for their lives in battle during WWI and with the Spanish Influenza! The narrator was amazing at becoming Mary Shelley Black and her voice was very pleasant to listen to because she really drew me more into the story. The book covers a year (1918) when spiritualism and seances are a big deal and there is also a loved story involved as well. Happy reading!Transported me to a different time and place!
