بعد سقوط النيزك الأعظم على الكوكب، تنحجب أشعة الشمس وتنحسر مصادر الطاقة تدريجياً فيغرق العالم في ظلام دامس. يدخل "الشرقاوي" بطل رواية "في ممر الفئران" في غيبوبة مفاجئة لا يعرف الأطباء لها سبباً تتنقله إلى عالمٍ غريب فيبدأ بعدها مغامرةً مثيرة في أرض الظلام حيث جيلٌ بأكمله نشأ في العتمة واعتبر النّور إحدى خرافات الأجداد.

فما دور "الشرقاوي" في هذا العالم وهل هو حقًا المُنقذ المنتظر؟ هل سينجح بانضمامه إلى جماعة النورانيين في إنقاذ مدن الظلام من أسرها أم أنَّ النهايات السعيدة لا تُناسب حلكة اللون الأسود الذي يغصّ به المكان؟
