Dead is dead. Missing is gone. When Felix Brewer meets nineteen-year-old Bernadette "Bambi" Gottschalk at a Valentine's Day dance in 1959, he charms her with wild promises, some of which he actually keeps. Thanks to his lucrative - if not all legal - businesses, she and their three little girls live in luxury. But on the Fourth of July in 1976, Bambi's comfortable world implodes when Felix, facing prison, vanishes. Though Bambi has no idea where her husband - or his money - might be, she suspects one woman does: his devoted young mistress, Julie.

Story
Heloise considers it a blessing to be a person who seldom attracts attention. In her suburb, she's just a mom, the young widow with the forgettable job, who somehow never misses a soccer game. In the state capital, she's the redheaded lobbyist with a good cause and a mediocre track record. But in discreet hotel rooms throughout the area, she's the woman of your dreams - if you can afford the hourly fee. For more than a decade, Heloise believed she was safe, managing to keep up this rigidly compartmentalized life. But her secret life is under siege. One county over, another so-called suburban madam has been found dead in her car, an apparent suicide.

Ugh the narrator
The narrator was hard to listen to, I’ve listen to a lot of Tess Monaghan books and this narrator was my least favorite. Her voice was distracting and a lot of the characters sounded the same but yet it felt over acted.

Great story with literary allusions
One of my favorite Lippmann books yet! The narrator was excellent (I didn't let myself be dissuaded by the negative reviews of this narrator--I really liked her), and the story is inventive and smart.

Excellent
Not a thriller (which is good). The pace is a bit slow, but a rich and interesting mystery is laid out in a leisurely rate. The character development is outstanding. The narration is outstanding and greatly enhances each character, and the city itself.

Best One Yet!!!
I’m a true Baltimorean and love the Tess Monaghan series, but this one really hit home...I grew up in the Poe Homes on Amity Street!!! I loved this one...can’t wait to start on my next book in this series!

Another great book in the series
I enjoy each of the books in the series. Each book keeps adding to make more enriched universe. Each book has so much Baltimore history and facts. This book was particularly fun.

More “ACTING!” than narrating
Enjoyable, especially if you’re a fan of Mr. Poe — and of Ms. Lippman. I am fond of both the authors, yet I found this production annoyingly narrated: too much acting and sometimes a slurring delivery with way too much attitude. She also mispronounced a few names, such as Ayn Rand. Is it so hard to look up the pronunciation?

Interesting
I like the author. I started the Tess Monaghan series after listening too When she was good. I loved the narrator on the first 3 books from my local library but I was really offputting by the narration of Sugar House & In a Strange City. I am going to try one more but I may not be able to fi ish if they all have the same narrator as the last 2.

Great wit and great way to learn some history while being thoroughly entertained
One of Laura Lippman's best Tess Monagham story lines. Really enjoy Rosenblatt's contribution in relaying the wit & humor of Laura's writing

Would be so much better with a reader from Baltimore
Great story - but the (rather famous) reader didn’t bother to find out how things are pronounced in Baltimore. Distracting and annoying.
