About this listen

Grey Eyes is a most unusual Seminole Indian. He is a friend of the British Governor of Florida during the Colonial Period and on 20 May 1767 accompanied by 25 Indian boys and his good companion Black Sandy engages to drive a herd of 500 Spanish cattle from Colerain Georgia to the new settlement of the Minorcans in New Smyrna Florida. At this time the historic Old King's Road did not exist. Governor James Grant credits Grey Eyes and his cattle drive with blazing the route into the difficult and dark swamps of Florida. By following ancient Indian trails he set the routing for the new British highway that would remain the main entry into Florida right up to 1914. Historic events are intertwined into a very readable history story that is partly fiction but mainly fact. This great cattle drive through St. Augustine, the Minorcan settlers, a terrible Florida war and a violent slave uprising often hidden from the history books all combine to entertainment and education in a little known part of American history. Grey Eyes will lead you into events that actually took the Seminole warriors into old Mexico. "I am Grey Eyes" is a continuation of the first book "The Search for Old King's Road" written by historian Bill Ryan. Bill is a director of the Flagler County Historical Society and may be found at : http://www.oldkingsroad.com His other books include: Osceola His Capture and Seminole Legends Bulow Gold The Search for Old King's Road Americas Indigenous Peoples Military United States Wars & Conflicts
