Story
While literacy is taken for granted in modern society, there’s another essential aspect of communication that is often overlooked: social intelligence. Without it, our personal and professional relationships suffer shallowness and often fizzle out. Networking, romance, and friendships are all incredibly challenging without a healthy level of social awareness. Unlike learning to read, however, many of us don’t become socially “literate” until far later in life; and even then, the journey towards true social intelligence is usually characterized by trial and error.

Story
One of the very best scientific predictors for how any child turns out - in terms of happiness, academic success, leadership skills, and meaningful relationships - is whether at least one adult in their life has consistently shown up for them. In an age of scheduling demands and digital distractions, showing up for your child might sound like a tall order. But as best-selling authors Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson reassuringly explain, it doesn’t take a lot of time, energy, or money. Instead, showing up means offering a quality of presence.

It may be the central irony of our technologically advanced, connected digital age that many people report not feeling sufficiently connected, in the traditional sense, with other people. Why would you even want to leave the house? Tinder finds you a perfect romantic match. Skype connects you with your friends around the globe. And Instagram shares your friends' vacation experiences. The value of solid relationships can’t be overestimated. Strong relationships mean meaning, community, and influence.

Success in anything heavily relies on your confidence and self-esteem. Whether it’s getting the job or getting the girl/boy, whether it’s closing the deal or winning over the in-laws, your confidence is the thing that gets you through the door. So many of us struggle with low self-esteem and a timid spirit. We believe we’re not enough. We think we could never be brave “like him” or successful “like her”, so we slump our shoulders, slink off into the background, and throw pity parties for ourselves.

Easy listen
This book was an easy listen for my son and I. He is 8 years old and the topics covered in the book are things we have talked about before but he seemed to listen even more when he was listening to someone else talk to him. This book keeps the lessons simple but also the points made were straight and to the point. Easy listen and something I will use with my son. I plan to dive into each chapter more and more with him. Thank you for a great book!

Important points made
Each of these lessons should be reinforced on a daily basis for those young minds that are so easily shaped by peer pressure. Self-respect cannot be learned early enough and is necessary to develop a healthy ego and sense of self. Highly recommend.

Great advice for kids
There are some things that parents think should come inherently just from growing up in the same household, so we don't have the conversations we should. This book has us covered, and then some. These "lessons" are more like a father talking to his child, with bits of wisdom and advice that every child needs to hear.

What a gem!
This book is amazing! These are things kids will most likely not learn at school, so parents should teach kids all of these at home. I think the topics mentioned in the book are the foundation of a successful adult. This is essential for every parent looking to raise admirable kids!
