About this listen
Discover the fascinating Philippines in this captivating audiobook on its history, from the origins of the archipelago’s first peoples until modern times.
The Philippines is possibly the most intriguing nation of maritime Southeast Asia. The archipelago has almost 8,000 islands that form the apex of the Coral Triangle of the Asian Pacific, as well as abundant marine life that constitutes almost half of this magnificent area’s oceanic megadiversity. Created from volcanic activity, the archipelago offers everything from extensive beaches to tropical forests and Himalayan-type highlands. Lush valleys and world-renowned rice terraces nestle between the mountains and volcanoes.
For the first half of the 20th century, the Americans controlled the Philippines, mostly as a strategic military stronghold. The Americans and Filipinos battled together to throw off Japanese occupation during the Second World War, and finally, in 1946, the Philippines became an independent state. Still heavily influenced by the West because of its history, the Filipino people are mostly Roman Catholic, and English is one of their primary languages. Beauty, history, and cultural diversity ensure this archipelago’s tradition as the “Pearl of the Orient Seas”.
In this audiobook, you will learn:
- That the Philippines is an area of biological and maritime megadiversity
- Why the islands have one of the oldest, most multilayered histories on Earth
- Why the Philippines was so attractive to colonizers
- How the Spanish managed to rule a diverse archipelago for more than three centuries
- To understand the ongoing relationship between the United States and the Philippines
- Why the islands are ethnically and culturally abundant but still unified
- How history has created its own island regions of independent rule

The one character trait that, sometimes, surpasses the human instinct for survival is curiosity. When humans discovered an entire hemisphere that lay beyond their own Eastern Hemisphere, the race was on. What opportunities would these new lands hold? Surely, a small country in Europe could wield the power of an empire if it could claim these new lands in the Americas.

Story
All in all, Japan seems to be a country of paradoxes and oppositions, of yin and yang. Yet it doesn’t seem to suffer from it; instead, it is thriving, growing, and developing, and it has been doing so for a long time. From those contradictions, a sense of unity and pride arose, guiding Japanese history and civilizational development through the ages, leaving an unquestionable mark on the world heritage and mankind. But this is only the surface of an astonishing culture that deserves a deeper look.

A survey of Philippines history, not an in-depth examination.
This was a very generalist overview of the Philippines, I was continually left wanting additional information or in depth exploration of topics covered. If you are looking for a “Philippines for Dummies” style book to start you learning journey of this area of the world, this is a good option.

Perfect introduction to the Philippines
Perhaps you learned about the American acquisition of the Philippines in the Spanish American war, but were unaware of how Spain colonized the islands, why the predominantly Catholic nation has a significant Muslim minority, or what life has been like in the Philippines since the WWII. If you’re looking for the answers to these questions and more, this Captivating History provides and excellent and accessible overview.
The title begins with the geologic and prehistoric experience and ends with the modern day. While this may seem like a great deal of ground to cover, the author did a fine job of capturing the long history, culture and diversity of the Philippine people. Ultimately, the book piqued my interest and has encouraged me to learn more about the topic.
