About this listen

This book is a general introduction to the History of Iran/Persia from the start of history till the end of Pahlavis. Iran's history started with the Medes in 700s BC and continues till today, with the Pahlavis being the last of the ruling dynasties which ruled Iran. Over the history, Iran alternated between Iran and Persia as the names. At times, it was represented by the names of tribes it ruled - Media after the Medes, Persia after the Persians, Parthia after the Parthians and even Zandiyeh after the Zand. However, Persia was the most dominant name representing the greatest two of the kingdoms which ever ruled Middle East - Achaemenids and Sassanids. On the other hand, the Persian identity stuck because any ruler who tried to assert his position against the Caliphates almost always ended up declaring themselves the successors of the Sassanids.with the Buyids being the first such. On the other hand, we would notice Iran beinf part of a major kingdom with borders extending in either direction. Safavids can be looked upon as the first rulers who can be truly identified as someone who represent Iran as a territorial nation. This book gives a profile of all the kingdoms which ruled Iran from the Medes to the Pahlavis. Asia Iran Middle East
