About this listen
A neuroscientist transforms the way we think about our brains, our health, and our personal happiness in this clear, informative, and inspiring guide - a blend of personal memoir, science narrative, and immediately useful takeaways that bring the human brain into focus as never before, revealing the powerful connection between exercise, learning, memory, and cognitive abilities.
Nearing 40, Dr. Wendy Suzuki was at the pinnacle of her career. An award-winning university professor and world-renowned neuroscientist, she had tenure, her own successful research lab, prestigious awards, and international renown.
That was when, to celebrate her birthday, she booked an adventure trip that forced her to wake up to a startling reality: despite her professional success, she was overweight, lonely, and tired and knew that her life had to change. Wendy started simply - by going to an exercise class. Eventually she noticed an improvement in her memory, her energy levels, and her ability to work quickly and move from task to task easily. Not only did Wendy begin to get fit, but she also became sharper; she had more energy, and her memory improved. Being a neuroscientist, she wanted to know why.
What she learned transformed her body and her life. Now it can transform yours.
Wendy discovered that there is a biological connection between exercise, mindfulness, and action. With exercise, your body feels more alive, and your brain actually performs better. Yes - you can make yourself smarter. In this fascinating book, Suzuki makes neuroscience easy to understand, interweaving her personal story with groundbreaking research and offering practical, short exercises - four-minute Brain Hacks - to engage your mind and improve your memory and your ability to learn new skills and function more efficiently.
Taking us on an amazing journey inside the brain as never before, Suzuki helps us unlock the keys to neuroplasticity that can change our brains, or bodies, and ultimately our lives.

Story
We are living in the age of anxiety, a situation that often makes us feel as if we are locked into an endless cycle of stress, sleeplessness, and worry. But what if we had a way to leverage our anxiety to help us solve problems and fortify our well-being? What if, instead of seeing anxiety as a curse, we could recognize it for the unique gift that it is? As a neuroscientist, Dr. Wendy Suzuki has discovered a paradigm-shifting truth about anxiety: Yes, it is uncomfortable, but it is also essential for our survival. In fact, anxiety is a key component of our ability to live optimally.

Story
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Does your dog get sad when you leave for the day? Does your cat purr because she loves you? Do bears attack when they’re angry? You can’t very well ask them. In fact, scientists haven’t been able to reach a consensus on whether animals even have emotions like humans do, let alone how to study them. Yet studies of animal emotion are critical for understanding human emotion and mental illness. In The Nature of the Beast, pioneering neuroscientist David J. Anderson describes a new approach to solving this problem.

Imagine, if you will, a disease - one that has only subtle outward symptoms but can hijack your entire body without notice; one that transfers easily between parent and child; one that can last a lifetime if untreated. According to Dr. Paul Conti, this is exactly how society should conceptualize trauma: as an out-of-control epidemic with a potentially fatal prognosis. In Trauma: The Invisible Epidemic, Dr. Conti examines the most recent research, clinical best practices, and dozens of real-life stories to present a deeper, richer, and more urgent view of trauma.

Story
Journalist and screen/life balance expert Catherine Price argues persuasively that our always-on, tech-addicted lifestyles have led us to obsess over intangible concepts such as happiness while obscuring the fact that real happiness lies in the everyday experience of fun. We often think of fun as indulgent, even immature and selfish. We claim to not have time for it, even as we find hours a day for what Price calls Fake Fun—bingeing on television, doomscrolling the news, or posting photos to social media, all in hopes of filling some of the emptiness we feel inside.

A groundbreaking guide to the surprising source of good health. Genetics and lifestyle are thought to be the two most important determinants of good health. But that is not the whole story. We have a second genome, our gut bacteria, that sets the dial on our bodies. Unlike our DNA, we can influence the gut bacteria, or microbiota, to optimize all aspects of our health. In The Good Gut, noted Stanford researchers Justin and Erica Sonnenburg investigate how the trillions of microbes that reside in our gastrointestinal tract help define us.

Technical too technical and story too anecdotal
From the title, I thought I'd get an individualized program based on research, but the book was about how exercise and meditation slowly changed a fat jerk into a fit and happier person.
The technical information seemed to be mostly about which parts of the brain were activate when. Without illustrations (at least in the audio version) I couldn't follow which specific parts of the brain were which (and I've taken physiology.)
The proof reading was good, and I did listen to the whole story, but I didn't find the useful information about healthy brains very dense.

Loved this book!!!
I’m not one to write reviews so this will be short, from the beginning of the book when I heard the authors voice, Susie Suzuki and how she spoke with enthusiasm and how she was from Sunnyvale , California right down the street from me, also we are the same age and wondered if we knew each other but realize we probably didn’t, wish I could meet her. Her book was captivating. I learned so much. I’ve always been interested in the brain! The story of her life and how she grew from different stages was so interesting to me. it was well written, and I loved especially the parts of her exercising, Meditation, love of food, romantic relationships, and friendships. I’m going to listen to it a second time! Thank you, Susie! Bravo! 🙌🏻

great book. easy to listen. everyone should learn
this book is not my normal genre but I loved it. i tried several others but this is the one i needed. I'm in mid 30s and have struggled with life long on n off again depression. when I'm not depressed I'm happy energetic and friendly and when I am depressed I am a miserable human being and it causes all kinds of problems in my relationships and career and weight gain. I realized I needed to understand my brain get of of this roller coaster. I know the amount of exercise i get, my weight and general mental well being are related in my history but is cause of release from depression from exercise or is the increase in exercise caused by the lift from depression? are they even related? and decided to learn more about my brain to avoid future depressive episodes. I think this book has given me not only the tools I need to meet that goal but the motivation as well. I learned about the relationship between my brain and exercise as well as so much more 'stuff' that I just know will improve my overall quality of life for the rest of my life! this book is a game changer! if u want to be happier, smarter and healthier get this book asap. thank u so much Wendy!!!!

The willingness of Wendy to share all aspects of her thoughts and feelings, like able and not socially acceptable.
It allowed me to look at my life as a progression of learning events that led to important satisfying changes in my life. It allowed me to see myself as someone who I like more than ever. A man with confidence to handle anything life has to offer in an easy going calm manner. It helped me to accept the true me.
