About this listen
Willow’s worst nightmare was being canceled. But the shadows in the woods of Camp Castaway might destroy more than her reputation.
After sitcom star Willow tweets herself into infamy and stumbles blind-drunk into a swimming pool, her agent ships her off to Camp Castaway. Nestled deep in upstate New York, Castaway is a summer camp for adults who are desperate to leave their mistakes behind. No real names, no phones . . . no way to call for help.
Willow’s fellow campers seem okay. Her own favorite actress is even here, making a s’more. And did that jaded writer, Dani, just wink at her? But the peaceful vibe is shattered when one of the campers vanishes and Willow finds a mutilated doll in her room with a threatening message rolled up inside its mouth. Terror grips the group, campers begin to lose their heads—literally—and disturbing past deeds come to light.
Is Willow about to get cancelled all over again, this time for good?

Story
CJ has survived the horror movie that is her life by following one rule: blend in and stay out of it. But that’s hard to do when your trauma gets turned into a bestselling book series. The Slasherville books are a true crime phenomenon, documenting the Wolf Man massacres that changed CJ’s life forever. CJ hates everything about the books and their fans, but at this point she’s just grateful there aren’t any more murders to write about. Until one day when an unpublished Slasherville book shows up on her doorstep predicting new Wolf Man killings.

Then a car accident changed everything. Spiraling with grief and guilt, Sammy scrambles for distraction. He finds it in shock-value videos of gore and violence that terrified him as a child. Marshall is still trying to put the pieces together after the death of her husband. After she is involved in a terrible accident, her editor sends her to the small, backwards town of Raeford to investigate a clearly ridiculous rumor: that a horse has given birth to a healthy, human baby boy. When Marshall arrives in Raeford, she finds an insular town that is kinder to the horses they are famous for breeding than to their own people. But when two horribly mangled bodies are discovered in a field—one a horse, one a human—she realizes that there might be a real story here.

When high school senior Charlotte agrees to babysit the Wilbanks twins, she plans to put the six-year-olds to bed early and spend a quiet night studying: the SATs are tomorrow, and checking the Native American/Alaskan Native box on all the forms doesn’t mean jack if you choke on test day. But tomorrow is also Halloween, and the twins are eager to show off their costumes—Ron is a nurse, in an old-fashioned white skirt-uniform, and Desi has an Authentic Squaw costume, complete with buckskin and feathered headdress. Excitement is in the air.

Critic reviews
"Taking an axe to smart phones, celebrity, and cancel culture, Heads Will Roll is a slasher that is both bloody and uplifting. And fun! Every copy should come with a bucket of popcorn."—Gus Moreno, author of This Thing Between Us
“Beautifully written and impossible to put down.”—Fiona Cummins, bestselling author of All of Us are Broken
“Winning’s latest is a warm love letter to slasher flicks… [he] masterfully builds a story that will leave readers breathless.... The pacing is frenetic and captivating...Recommend to those who enjoyed My Heart Is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones, The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix, or Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare.”—Library Journal

Allie witnessed every man she ever knew be consumed by fearsome symptoms: scorching fevers and internal bleeding, madness and uncontrollable violence. The world crumbled around her. No man was spared, and the few survivors were irrevocably changed. They became disturbingly strong, aggressive, and ferocious. Feral.

Story
Tamsen Donner must be a witch. That is the only way to explain the series of misfortunes that have plagued the wagon train known as the Donner Party. Depleted rations, bitter quarrels, and the mysterious death of a little boy have driven the pioneers to the brink of madness. They cannot escape the feeling that someone—or something—is stalking them. Whether it was a curse from the beautiful Tamsen, the choice to follow an experimental route West, or just bad luck - the 90 men, women, and children of the Donner Party are at the brink of one of the deadliest adventures in history.

Story
Meet Jack Price and the Seven Demons: Doc, the evil mad scientist presently using Jack for sex; Rex, an explosives expert who doesn’t ask too many questions so long as something goes boom; Volodya, a Ukrainian assassin who may or may not be a cannibal; Charlie, a comic book artist with computer skills and an anarchist bent; Lucille, whose specialty is razor-edged hugs; and Jack’s predecessor, Fred, who doesn’t contribute a whole lot owing to being a severed head on a stick. Story
When a young woman is found brutally murdered in her own apartment with an intricate pattern of lines carved into her face, Copenhagen police detectives Jeppe Korner and Anette Werner are assigned to the case. Soon, they establish a link between the victim, Julie Stender, and her landlady, Esther de Laurenti, who’s a bit too fond of drink and the host of raucous dinner parties with her artist friends. Esther also turns out to be a budding novelist - and when Julie turns up as a murder victim in the unfinished mystery she’s writing, the link between fiction and real life grows.

Most of the other characters are kind of the stock archetypes you’d find in slashers, but they do reveal more layers to them as the story goes on; except for really the first victim as he exits the story within 1-2 chapters. Keeping a majority of them as red herrings helps to make the mystery around who the killer is quite interesting & having the POV of the victims who meet their end in a certain chapter allows us to be part of their horrific demise. The deaths are fairly graphic, but still unsettling in its visceral brutality.
The urban legend in the vein of Cropsey from “The Burning” also lends a creepy undercurrent surrounding the future onslaught as it sets up our possible antagonist, Knock Knock Nancy. The lore about her is the classic ghost story about a revenant avenging their death, but when the true depths are uncovered it becomes a more realized horrible tragedy regarding her actual identity.
While I have a few minor gripes with how the relationship between our villains is portrayed, it possibly makes sense when considering how warped the perspective is. It doesn’t ruin the reveal & I like that there is some justice that will be served and our survivors are going to grow from what they’ve done.

"Willow" is the newest arrival to Camp Castaway. Castaway is a digital retreat for adults looking to disconnect from the world for a few weeks.
No TV, no phones, not even any music. Just nature and self reflection. This is the ideal place for Willow who's running from her very public identity.
Things quickly unravel though, as they always do in slashers because, as we know, "all summer camps are cursed"
This was brutally, fast, and fun. The characters were interesting while the story was everything we expect from a great slasher.
Fun slasher
