About this listen
I'd been gone for a year, incarcerated in a hidden prison. The verdict was guilty; the punishment, death.
Invoking the Law, I've got my freedom until my sentence is carried out. Three days, then I'm history. Gone, not even a memory. Wiped from the collective consciousness of those that knew, even loved me.
Magic drives me on as I try to right so many wrongs committed in the name of justice. The vamps are mad, everyone's acting weird, I've got to clear my name, and nobody seems to believe I don't know what to do. Panic makes me act irrationally as the hours slip away and I become increasingly frantic.
If it wasn't for Kate, and the need to help my nearest and dearest, I'd have let the Council put me out of my misery. But I'm alive, and I uncover information that ensures I'll do whatever it takes to remain that way. I just have to avoid getting crushed, bitten, beaten, eaten, or zapped with the dark arts.
I should have stayed in prison. At least in there nobody tried to stomp me.

I watched in horror as dark magic sprang from my hand faster than an imp after your socks. I didn't know my name, let alone that I had such power. The man was dead. I panicked. I ran. How was I to know I was a dark magic enforcer, tasked with keeping magic hidden from the world? Yeah, total noob move, I know. But my memory is returning, and the Hidden have given me 24 hours to make amends. Cover it up. Finish the job I was given, or else. Failure isn't an option.

The phone rang, and like a fool I answered. Mistake number one. Then I agreed to do a job for the Hidden Council. Definitely mistake number two. Now I've lost count of my bad choices, same as I have the bodies, as they're piling up faster than a troll after free chalk. As I get to grips with this new magic I've been gifted, the city remains under a spell of violence, and it's down to yours truly to deal with it. But I'm a noob at this job, ill-prepared and with my own personal demons to fight.

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

On a little-known planet, Archmage Varic Vallenar casts a grand spell to empower himself with the magical abilities of his alternate selves. The ritual works too well, granting Varic not only the magic but also the memories from six lives. Including their gruesome deaths. Now, Varic has power greater than any wizard in galactic history, but he knows that won’t be enough. The enemies he faced in those alternate lives were apocalyptic in scale. Terrors of technology and magic. Nothing that he, or anyone, can defeat.

Which, given the food services contract in Bethesda Hospital, creates some difficulty. Eventually it appears that God's will is for Chad to join a group called Monster Hunters International.

Movie material
I started by reading the Dresden files by Jim Butcher, then I went on to read the Alex Verus series but I got tired of him always being the under dog so I moved to the Witchcraft Mysteries by Juliet Blackwell then I read some books by Kevin Hearns and enjoyed the mind talking dog Oberon and now I'm hooked on the dark magic enforcer. I like the way the black spark gets things done, has a sense of humor sexy vampire girlfriend quirky witchy grandmother and the continuous adventure along the way. Oh and the fairies with their beautiful ears that drive him wild. I usually jump around not reading books in order, but not with this series, I want to make sure I don't miss anything.
Warning, once you start read/listening these books you will find it hard if not difficult to put down. The narrator Gildart Jackson is a fabulous reader, he has a smooth reading style great character voice changes with the ability to pull you into the story world. He's the perfect narrator for this series. I could go on and on but that would take too much time and space. So I would suggest you do yourself a favor and get these series of books and enjoy. You won't regret it.

Innocent until proven guilty. Spark proves it!
We meet Spark at his sentencing of death. We last saw him after killing the vampire, Taavi.
To bring you up-to-date. In Evil Spark, vampire Yrjo, wanted to eliminate vampire Taavi. As a result, Yrjo burned Taavi home killing many of his nest. That incident precipitated Taavis’ genocide machinations in New Spark. You would think that Spark is a hero? No.
What is great about Spark books? With six hours audio time, the action begins right off. We lose part of our Spark family through murder, which made me very angry. In New Spark, we lost Plum so I was not in the mood to lose anyone else.
Spark returns a year after his arrest and everything has changed. Madge lets him have breakfast on the house. There was a shake-up in the council members and Rikka is huge. Spark has three days, to find who framed him, save Rikka from a hit by a magical creature who is immune to magic, save Kate from depression and earn her forgiveness, help get grandma’s house back in order and prepare for his sentence of death. Everything must be done NOW.
There are twist and turns in this plot that were totally unexpected. Kudos to Al.K. Line, the author to present use with a situation, which is not usually employed as a plot. Reading the series in order is a must to understand and admire the threads that are woven to cumulative in this explosive ending.
The force and power of the confrontation is like the Simon Green’s Nightside series, with John Taylor. When Spark gets his epiphany of the killer, it is much like when John opens his third eye. There is a visceral tearing of the fabric of time and physical being of Spark much like John when he uses his undo powers. For both characters, the magnitude of their greatness was perceived and manipulated when they were innocent kids.
Spark’s magic is poisoned with the violence and goring on the elemental forces and it changed his life. It is more addictive than a drug and comes with a high potential to want power. That power, the desire to wield it, keep it, and increase it was the catalyst, which changed Spark’s life 100 years ago. Evil many times ascribe the same desires to others, even to the detriment of love.
This novel was more emotional for me with the treachery and death. I hope you enjoy it
