About this listen
A fun wildlife adventure book set in the Northland wilderness.
March, under the Eagle Moon, the tale sparks to life. Our hero, Gruff, a black bear cub, blinks open his eyes to the world for the very first time. Born within the secure confines of a cavern atop a sturdy ridge, Gruff carefully ventures forth with his mother, Jezebel, an aging but knowingly adaptable bear. Together, they explore the unspoiled expanse of the Northland, its blooming springs, lush forests, and wealth of flora, bracing numerous trials of daily survival. With every passing day marked by beetle battles or encounters with massive moose, Gruff gradually familiarizes himself with the vast wonders and looming dangers of his homestead under Jezebel's watchful regard.
However, the natural harmony abruptly shatters with the arrival of Stanton, a fur trader, accompanied by his hearty dog named Chaco. Intent on acquiring provisions and a bear cub for his dear sister, Doris, Stanton tragically ends Jezebel's life, leaving Gruff alone in the wild. Captured and distressed, Gruff is taken to Stanton's camp. Over time, he and Chaco overcome their initial tensions to form an extraordinary companionship, embarking on shared adventures, revealing the potential for an unconventional bond.
As Stanton plans to unite Gruff and Chaco with his sister, the trio traverses various terrains, braving winter's savagery and welcoming spring's rebirth. Gruff’s primal instincts ably guide them, especially through intensely thrilling forest fires, showcasing his adept survival skills. Amidst the backdrop of hunger and threats in an alien land, their steadfast spirit surfaces, dedicated to their enduring journey.
Upon reaching the deserted cabin of Doris, they embark on a further quest to locate her. Gruff, trapped again in a snare meant for another bear, seemingly stretches their reunion. However, Doris, now Stanton's beloved, recognizes Gruff and Chaco, welcoming them into her abode, and their joyful reunion resonates through the wilderness.
In their newfound home, domesticated Gruff assumes an unusual and celebrated status, wearing a collar as a badge of his association with the household, staying close to his companions, Chaco, and Doris. Together, they grow and evolve, mirroring the deep, transformative bond formed when the wild meets human resilience in the untamed terrain of the Northland.
Rooted in its raw essence, this tale of Gruff is a testament to the indomitability of nature, highlighting the extraordinary friendships bridging the chasm between the human and animal realms. Capturing Gruff and Chaco’s shared escapades, the narrative breathes life into the rugged beauty of the Northland, playing out the delicate balance of survival and companionship interspersed within wild expanses.
