But Detective Phillip Straker isn't a wrestling fan. The bodies pile up like dirty laundry: sex-obsessed tramps used as playthings by some unspeakable creature. Straker is determined to solve the rash of mutilation murders with trimmings that beg description. Is it just coincidence, or do all the victims have something in common?
Investigative reporter Melinda Pierce will do anything to find out, by offering herself up as a sexual spittoon in order to infiltrate the arcane and lust-drenched warrens of the backstage of professional wrestling. There in malodorous locker rooms and unsavory motels, she partakes in carnal forays so gross, so downright nasty they'd make a porn star puke.

Edward Lee is sick & twisted - I like it
I am almost ashamed that I laughed out loud a few times at some of the nasties in here. Almost. Not quite. It’s Edward Lee, man. What do you expect? Inappropriate on so many levels. It wouldn’t even be Edward Lee if you didn’t throw up in your mouth a little. Goon is no exception. Trust me.

What did I just listen to?
Would you consider the audio edition of Goon to be better than the print version?
No idea. I didn't know this book existed until a few days ago.
What other book might you compare Goon to and why?
There is no other book I can compare it to
What about Joe Hempel’s performance did you like?
If he didn't puke while narrating I'd be surprised. However he was able to portray the characters well enough and I didn't have an issue telling who was who. His impression of Ric Flair needs work though
Any additional comments?
This is one of the most disgusting books I've ever read or listened to. I enjoyed the story enough, but really, Edward Lee could have turned down the gore and grotesque sexual descriptions a notch. I almost had to stop listening because it churned my stomach. Seriously, only listen if you have a strong stomach.

started out pretty interesting.
i was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. In all fairness, the ratings on this book for sexual content were right on. sooooo much sex in this book. it kind of distracted me from the plot of the story. at first i thought the story line was great. then i got to the end of the book and i was mostly disappointed in the ending. this was a different kind of book than i had ever read before, and honestly i probably wouldn't venture on this direction again. narrator was very good though. at one part in the story i wanted to puke after getting a mental image of what was happening, so the author gets an a for shock value.

Grotesque!

I am going to admit I was really hesitant on this one. It was gruesome, sick, and gag inducing but I loved the dark humor and really liked the book.

Exciting. and intriguing
Incredible story of murder and mystery.. ~ another book I just couldn't put down till my eyes blurred and the clock was saying 3am time to sleep ~ kept me right on the edge till the last page ~ great job and love the storyline ~ will I tell much about the book absolutely not and ruin it for you just know you must get this one ..

Don't wuss out!!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
God yes, my friends are as twist minded as I so I think they would totally enjoy it.
What did you like best about this story?
How it kept pushing the limits constantly and never failed to deliver. It was engaging, interesting, twist and turns that I never saw coming, the narration was awesome and I blazed through it so fast because I was so interested on whats happening next.
Have you listened to any of Joe Hempel’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No I have not but believe you me you have got yourselves a fan for life now. I will add many more of these collections to my wishlist now.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yeah the deputy's story definitely moved something awful in the pit of my guts.
Any additional comments?
Loved it loved it loved it, do not wuss out and keep with it. You might be reluctant to stop at parts but don't because it is such a good book. I await future releases of this genre.

Totally Unique and Creepy Story
Would you listen to Goon again? Why?
Yes it was a totally different book from what I normal listen to. There were many things to make the listener cringe and gag. If you enjoy things like Pro Wrestling and Law and Order SUV this could be a good title.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
This title did keep me on edge, you never knew what was coming next something violent or something gross or both. It had elements of horror and of humor as well.
What about Joe Hempel’s performance did you like?
Mr Hempel brought the story to life in a three dimensional way that was enjoyable. He is one of those narrators that is a true talent.
Who was the most memorable character of Goon and why?
The most memorable character was The Captain of the State Police. He was leading the investigation but was really at times just not seeing the forest for the trees. And the things he did and experienced during the story were cringe worthy.

Very well narrated vivid and grotesque images

I was offered a free copy in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.
Goon is the king of the low category of wrestling. He is tall, strong, powerful and absolutely indestructible. But Goon has a secret, because he is also a serial killer. Reporter Melinda and inspector Straker will try to demonstrate that Goon is behind all the recent murders, but they may need need to cross a dangerous line.
There are not lots of books like 'Goon', and if you decide to go for it you will need either to like the genre or listen to it with an open mind. There are several scenes that many would considerate disgusting, but if I was able to eat lunch while listening to it, it is not something that you cannot stand. If you let go you will find yourself laughing hard at the grotesque images, and even accepting the mystic part of it.
The wrestling world is something completely unknown to me, and I had no idea about the ring rats culture. It was an interesting read in which I have learned something new, and the authors gave it the ultimate twist.
Joe Hempel was, as always, superb. He delivered the story in his very personal way, making you forget that you are listening to a book. I got immersed into the story and enjoyed the ride. He even had to burp! What I said, he is a professional, and he makes you believe in the story.
This was not my typical book but I enjoyed the vivid scenes and the great narration. Even if you are not into this kind of literature, I encourage you to try it, it will be a hoot, and it is just about three and a half hours.
